Fast Food Review: Chick-Fil-A's New Spicy Chicken Sandwich

L. Spain
I am a "chickenist." As a young man, I could eat a 21-piece bucket of KFC unassisted. When my grandma fried chicken, I could pile the bones a mile high. Growing up in north Florida, we ate fried chicken regularly at a place that would bring it out in huge cast iron skillets. From KFC to Popeye's, if they served chicken, I was there to eat it. So, when Chick-Fil-A announced the introduction of a new Spicy Chicken sandwich, I was right man to review the new sandwich and I was right there at the drive thru window. I ordered a #3 combo meal that came with a spicy Chicken sandwich, waffle fries, and a beverage. As an experienced Chik-Fil-A connoisseur, I had mine with extra pickles and lemonade. My wife wanted the same combination with some mayo for her sandwich.

Our neighborhood Chick-Fil-A had it ready quickly and I raced home to eat it hot. A few minutes later, I was home, the food was still hot, and we were ready to eat. I was pleased by the appearance of my Chick-Fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich. The chicken piece was large, well-battered, and had a nice shape the just bulged outside of the bun without being unwieldy. From outside appearances, the Chick-Fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich looks much like an everyday, mild-mannered, Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich. This sandwich even has the same bun as any other Chick-Fil-A sandwich. You'd never suspect that this chicken sandwich from the high-diddly-diddly, closed for church on Sunday, folks at Chick-Fil-A would deliver a kick!

But, kick it does! The Chick-Fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich is quite spicy. The spicy taste reminds me somewhat of the tabasco-infused flavor of buffalo wings. Yet, this sandwich does not fully go there. Other spices and flavors pull it back just a little bit. The heat never becomes too much to comfortably eat. However, you will still taste the spicy flavor on your tongue and lips minutes after consuming the Chick-Fil Spicy Chicken Sandwich. The chicken was still present as a flavor, was well cooked, and had a nice texture. The spices complemented the chicken and worked well with the waffle fries.

Despite the extra kick, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich remains civilized. It stays in the bun, isn't messy, and is just the right sized. In short, it is the kind of consistent, quality, sandwich we expected from Chick-Fil-A. Some diners will probably find the spice a little too hot. They may want to knock it down a bit by getting their sandwich with cheese or ording a shake. However, I appreciate Chick-Fil-A's willingness to commit to a truly spicy chicken sandwich. The big flavor is worth it. According to Chick-Fil-A, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich comes in at 490 calories, 20grams of fat, and a whopping 1730 milligrams of sodium. It is fried chicken!

Overall, the Chick-Fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a nice addition to the Chick-Fil-A menu. If you want the consistency of Chick-Fil-A with a little extra kick, the Spicy Chicken Sandwich is a definite option. Wendy's, Popeyes, and all the other fast food restaurant chains should be a little worried. I think Chick-Fil-A has a winner with their Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
