Is "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" back to claim another group of awkward teenagers? It seems unlikely but yet somewhat intriguing. Many other classic movies have been remade with new actors and actresses."Fast Times" has such a timeless theme that it could be rebooted without missing a beat. The story is still the same even though nearly 30 years have passed. The innocent guy chases the suddenly promiscuous girl. Sound familiar and like something that might go over well with the audience of today?
Could the 30-year mark signal time for a remake of one of the greatest cult classics during that era? Who would themovie cast in the roles made famous by Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Forest Whitaker, Judge Reinhold and Phoebe Cates?
Here is my list of current actors who could help make a "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" remake not only very watchable but another timeless classic.
1) Jeff Spicoli
Sean Penn played this role to perfection. Not only was he a great stoner, Penn offered up some of the more hilarious moments during the movie-like when he ordered a pizza to be delivered to his classroom. Spicoli is perhaps the most noted character to emerge from the 80s film. So who should be cast in the role of Spicoli? My choice for the part would be Emile Hirsch. Hirsch might be a little older but Penn didn't exactly look like an 18-year-old student at the time either. The "Into the Wild" actor is my first pick for the role and I think he'd pull it off without a hitch. Alex Pettyfer might also be a strong fit for the "stoner dude" role. Maybe a third alternative would be a long haired Zac Efron. Rory Culkin or Taylor Kitsch of "Friday Night Lights" might also be possibilities. Maybe an outside the box selection would be Jonah Hill.
2) Brad Hamilton
This role played by Judge Reinhold wouldn't need an overly energetic guy. Hamilton was always down after being dumped by his girlfriend. His infamous fantasy scene watching Phoebe Cates get naked by the pool would need someone with a great jaw dropping ability. I would say Michael Cera would play the part quite well if handed the opportunity. Cera has the kind of ho-hum attitude needed for the role and could provide some comic relief during other moments. Another guy I think could play the part is Hunter Parrish from "Weeds."
3) Stacy Hamilton
Jennifer Jason Leigh played the role of the character who gets knocked up while fooling around as a teenager. My best bet for this character would be Emma Stone. Stone, who has starred in movies like "Superbad" and "Easy A" plays the innocent yet naughty high school girl quite well. I also think Anna Kendrick from the "Twilight" series would be a nice fit for the girl next door who explores her sexuality in this coming of age movie. Brie Larson of "United States of Tara" might also portray a mean Stacy Hamilton. Or how about Dianna Agron of "Glee" fame?
4) Linda Barrett
Could anybody ever forget the pool scene with Phoebe Cates? Cates also showed her co-worker and BFF Stacy some other naughty stuff in the school cafeteria during one scene with a carrot. I think Megan Fox or Vanessa Hudgens might fit well for this role.Either girl would be a great brown haired 80s sexpot. I can't imagine Selena Gomez would venture into this territory but she certainly also has the look.
5) Mike Damone
Robert Romanus played the original role of the guy who knocks up Stacy Hamilton during a brief moment at her poolhouse. For this role, I think Paul Iacono would make a good fit. The New Jersey native could pull off the accent and come across as a teenage ticket scalper. Maybe an alternative would be Joe Jonas.
6) Mark Ratner
Brian Backer played the original role on "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" perfectly. Michael Cera might be just awkward enough to pull off this role of the guy who chases Stacy around even after his best friend knocks her up. What about Kevin McHale of "Glee"-minus the wheelchair of course?
7) Charles Jefferson
Forest Whitaker was a great meathead of a football player in this 80s flick. Who could fill his shoes during a remake? I think Michael B. Jordan of "Friday Night Lights" is a terrific actor but not quite sure if he'd fit the part of the guy who trashes an opponents car. He'd need to gain weight to be the big bulky football player that everyone is intimidated around. Tristan Wilds might be the ultimate catch for this role. Wilds is known for his role on the CW series "90210."
