Stone Mountain, Georgia came into being more than 300 million years ago, long before dinosaurs made an appearance on the earth. The face of Stone Mountain has a Memorial Carving and it depicts the three most important figures from the Confederacy: President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The carved surface of Stone Mountain is larger than the carving on Mount Rushmore.
Yet, Stone Mountain, Georgia is more than just a mountain carving that took fifty years to complete. It is a park full of adventure for the whole family. There is always something going on at Stone Mountain. The Park hosts many annual events throughout the year. Here are each month's specialties.
February on Stone Mountain
- Big Apple Circus
April on Stone Mountain
- Spring Break Fun: The Lasershow Spectacular is available each night through the entire event. Both kids and teens can show their skills on Sky Hike, one of the largest adventure ropes courses in the entire US. Musical acts and other specialties focus on kids during this spring event each year.
May on Stone Mountain
- Memorial Weekend Salute to the Troops: Stone Mountain honors American soldiers past and present with special events throughout the park, as well as the ever-popular Stone Mountain Laser Show.
June on Stone Mountain
- Gospel Celebration: This annual event has gospel singers from every genre and usually includes various Christian conferences at the same time by keynote Christian speakers and national Christian leaders.
July on Stone Mountain
- Fantastic Fourth Celebration: There is no fireworks show and celebration like a Stone Mountain Independence Day. Combine fantastic fireworks with one of the top laser shows in the nation, along with great music and fun, and you have a recipe for a Fourth of July in Atlanta that should be experienced at least once by every American.
August on Stone Mountain
- Last Blast of Summer: Special events and shows are planned throughout the Month of August prior to Labor Day in September. Laser shows and other activities for kids and teens are held throughout the park.
September on Stone Mountain
- Yellow Daisy Festival: This is one of Atlanta's most popular events among locals and increasingly visitors each year. Over 400 artisans display their masterpieces and several generations of Atlanta mothers, daughters and granddaughters can be seen shopping for that one of a kind piece. Many children's activities are also provided.
October on Stone Mountain
- Pumpkin Festival: This festival lasts through the entire month of October each year. Lasershows are held on Saturdays throughout the event. Fall decorations are throughout the park and there are many activities, such as dressing your own Scarecrow.
- Tour of Southern Ghosts: This event has been held for over 25 years in the Antebellum Plantation of the park. Professional storytellers tell stories that are haunting and a little scary, but never frightening and all tales are appropriate for children.
- Highland Games: This has been an annual tradition for over 38 years. Hear the bagpipes, fiddles and harps. Highlights include Highland Dancing, the Kirking of the Tartans and clan athletic events. This is always held the third weekend in October, rain or shine.
November on Stone Mountain
- Indian Festival and Pow Wow: This four day annual event takes place at the start of November each year. There are Native American storytellers, dance and drum competitions, bow making demonstrations and so much more.
December on Stone Mountain
- Stone Mountain Christmas: Stone Mountain is transformed into a holiday fantasy with millions of lights. Some of the highlights include a Winter Wonderland Walkway, a Polar Express 4 D Experience, and a Sleigh Ride with Santa Song and Dance Revue Show.
