Fasting with Protein Shakes

Stephanie Mojica
Protein shakes may be a good way to quickly lose weight, whether you are preparing for bariatric surgery or just want to get rid of some extra pounds. While theoretically it is simple to use only protein shakes for your diet, in practice it requires discipline and should not be considered a permanent eating solution. You can choose to make your own shakes at home using a variety of available recipes or commercial mixes. Another option is to purchase already-prepared, ready-to-drink shakes online or at your local grocery store. Once you have the shakes in hand, discipline and a few simple steps are required to successfully carry out your weight loss plan.

Drink about 46 to 56 grams of protein per day if you are not eating other sources of food. Remember that you can gain weight by drinking too many protein shakes even if you're not eating anything else, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Drinking plenty of water is an important part of any diet, especially if you are looking to lose weight quickly without harming your overall health. Medical experts, such as those with the Mayo Clinic and the Institute of Medicine, recommend you consume at least eight glasses of water a day. Increase the amount of water you drink if you are significantly overweight and/or physically active.

Exercise is an important part of any weight loss plan including protein shake diets, according to the Mayo Clinic. Their doctors warn protein shakes alone won't cause you to lose weight. Incorporate physical activity into your life if you're not already doing so. You can walk, climb stairs, swim, dance, do yoga or Pilates, or ride a stationary bike.

Join a support group if you need emotional support in executing your protein shakes-only diet. Overeaters Anonymous is just one of the groups that is free and does not require membership to a particular religion or diet program.

Remember to talk to your doctor before drinking only protein shakes if you have an existing health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. No matter what your health status, be sure to take multivitamins daily as protein shakes alone cannot supply your body with all the nutrients it needs.
