Fat is Evil? Since When?

John Walton
Fat people have been getting a lot of heat lately in the news. I see articles all to often about how obesity is killing America, or how we have a fat epidemic. Yes i would tend to agree that people do seem to be getting bigger, but as long as your healthy, and can perform what you need to do, and your not 1000 pounds and glued to the couch, i think that's just fine.

What we have now as a result of all this talk about how grossly unattractive it is to be overweight, is a growing amount of people who are much to skinny. I see to many people walking around today who look like a light breeze would vaporize them into dust. These people would not have existed without constant reinforcement from the media that any amount of fat is disgusting. In fact if you go back in time far enough, people that skinny simply would have died.

In my opinion some people actually look better fat. Can you imagine if our favorite holiday figure, Santa Clause, was a skinny man with a big beard that liked to dress up and offer gifts to your children? He probably would not be nearly as popular. For some people, being overweight adds a certain aspect of jolliness just like old Saint Nick himself.

Fat people in the entertainment industry have made us laugh for centuries and yet we continue to berate people like them who are not successful comedians. Chris Farley, John Candy, and Curly Howard are some of the greatest comedians of all time, they are all fat, and most of their comedy would not be nearly as funny had they possessed the body of Tom Cruise.

So if fat is not causing someone a problem, if its not causing them to have serious health problems, or preventing them from bathing or carrying out daily activities, leave them alone. A lot of times a person may not even be able to do anything about the fact that they are overweight. There are millions of people in America who are overweight, but they seem to be the same people who make everyone else smile, the people who make everyone else in the room's day a little better, the people who you want to be around when your having a bad day, so why would we want to bring them down?
