If you're in the Pittsburgh area and you're looking for a bite to eat, look no further than Fat Head's Saloon on the Historic South Side area of town. This small neighborhood bar and grill is among the several restaurants, fast food restaurants, bars and eateries on the stretch of Carson Street in the South Side. Fat Head's Saloon is nothing like the rest of the dining choices. Sure, they may look fancy or you may not have to wait to be seated, but Fat Head's Saloon has something that all those other places do not; a huge menu, delicious food, massive portions, friendly staff, and oh yeah - 43 craft-brewed beers on tap and one hand-pumped "real ale."
Fat Head's Saloon takes the definition to bar food to a whole new level. Let's start at the beginning. Many normally find their way to Fat Head's Saloon for their first time by word of their Monday night wing nights. That's how I got my start. Fat Head's has 14 different wing sauces available and conveniently marked on the menu with a fat head with horns as to where they rank in regards to heat level. The wings are small, but full of flavor and filling! Five wings are a whopping $6.95 - hence Monday night wing nights are a necessity as the price drops to 45 cents per wing.
Fat Head's munchies or appetizers as you would call them, are a meal in itself. You can choose from onion rings, chicken dip, spinach dip, artichoke dip, pepperoni rolls, beer mussels, bacon cheddar fries, quesadillas, stuffed hot peppers, nachos and more for under $10 each. The munchies serving size could feed two to three people.
Fat Head's Saloon is known for its Headwiches. Headwiches are sandwiches the size of your head with a massive kick. All of the Headwiches are under $11 and pack one huge punch when it comes to flavor, size and stomach filler. Let's take the Artery Clogger for example. This Headwich contains two fried eggs topped with ham, bacon, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. If you don't think that's a unique concoction, try The Southside Slopes. A colossal Headwich containing kielbasa topped with fried pierogies, American cheese, grilled onions, and horseradish sauce. I have never had the pleasure of trying a Headwich, however my fiancé loves the Beer Camp Part Duex which is defined as grilled bratwurst topped with pierogies, sauerkraut, provelone cheese, and Head Hunter Mustard. Headwiches can feed two people, but don't count on your loved one sharing. These sandwiches are too good to part with!
Fat Head's Saloon also carries subs, chicken sandwiches, melts, and basic sandwiches such as BLT's, Italian Subs, chicken parmesan, and fish. All of which are under $11. I have never stuck to the basics when dining at Fat Head's. I always thought if I wanted something uninteresting I could walk down the road to some fast food joint. At Fat Head's, I absolutely love the burgers!
Arrogant Onion Burger, Beasty Burger, Quadruple Bypass Burger, Beach Burger, Mackey Burger, and other overgenerous burgers are also under $11 and will take your taste buds to their limit! Such well named burgers match their ingredients perfectly. Such as the Quadruple Bypass Burger which is topped with sharp cheddar and bacon among mounds of slow-smoked beef brisket in Fat Head's own Beasty BBQ sauce topped with a sunny side up egg with horseradish sauce on the side. My personal favorite is the Arrogant Onion Burger that contains sharp cheddar cheese, pickle chips, onion rings, and smoky BBQ sauce. This burger is one zesty and massive burger that is cooked to order, like all of Fat Head's food, and is served with fries.
Fat Head's Saloon has a strict no substitutions rule for their meals. Fries are served with burgers, fried fish, and tuna steak sandwiches. Homemade chips are served with all other sandwiches. These are served at no extra charge and stressed that there are no substitutions or swaps from chips to fries and vice verse.
Fat Head's salads are even bigger than the Headwiches. You literally get served your salad in a mixing bowl sized portion. Salad choices include the traditional steak, house, and chicken. You can also brave the out of the ordinary choices such as jalapeno cheddar chicken salad, tuna steak salad, and spinach salad.
For the meat lover fans, Fat Head's offers ribs and steak which is under $30.
Beer is another extremely popular attraction when it comes to Fat Head's Saloon. Pale ales, spiced beer, IPA, double IPA, amber, red ales, lagers, bock, brown ales, wheat beer, barley wine, stout, porter, fruit beer, seasonal beers, and the list does go on and on and on! In the last three years, Fat Head's has won first place in six beer awards.
If you don't have room for a beer with your meal, you can grab some to go! Fat Head's offers a 6 pack shop which is located upstairs from the dining room where you can mix and match your beers as well as shop some Fat Head's merchandise.
After your first taste of Fat Head's Saloon, you will want to come back quite often. This is where Fat Head's offers you a frequent flyer card that each time you order a beer, Fat Head's keeps track and when you reach a certain goal, you receive free merchandise and your name goes up on 'The Wall of Foam'. 'The Wall of Foam' is comprised of several plaques located around the restaurant highlighting Fat Head's most famous frequent beer consumers.
The wait staff is also a great plus to visiting Fat Head's. Being so popular, there are wait times, but as soon as you're seated, your server is there with a smile. We have dined at Fat Head's for over six years, probably more than 50 times, and not once have we run into a grumpy server, an incorrect order or any type of improper service.
Fat Head's Saloon in Pittsburgh is the place to go for a meal that is out of this world!
