I went on to ask him about the actual impact of the crash. Mike told me that from his vantage point he could only see the descent of the plane. He told me that it was impossible for him to see the crash, but he sure did hear it. He described the feeling that he got as one of those that compare to when you know that something really bad is happening.
Mike said it was hard to put the sound of the crash into words. The closest thing that he could describe it to would be sitting at an intersection and seeing a head on collision directly in front of you. Mike went on to describe the situation as sad scary and nerve-racking all at the same time. He said that he felt sorry for the people who were involved in the crash. His biggest concern, aside from the obvious, was the fact that the plane was coming apart. He also said that he couldn't tell for sure, but it seemed like the aircraft's landing gear wasn't even deployed. He said it seemed like everything that could possibly go wrong during a plane flight, looked like it was going wrong at the moment of that crash.
I asked Mike about the scene that ensued, following the plane crash. He said that shortly after the crash the area was full of fire trucks, police cars, and paramedics. He said that he didn't stay there much longer when he heard all the sirens, considering that he was just passing through on his way back to Lakewood and he didn't want to get caught up in all the chaos that followed the crash. He said as he was leaving the area that he tuned in to 1160 a.m. radio trying to get traffic information. 1160 WOBM is one of the local radio stations for the Jersey shore area. He said that they were talking about the crash nonstop on the station. The station kept updating news as they found bodies from the crash throughout the evening.
At the end of our conversation I asked Mike if any of the people survived the crash. He told me that at the time four people were confirmed dead and that they were still looking for one possible survivor. He also said that from what he heard about the whole wreckage, there probably wouldn't be any survivors as the plane crashed upside down cabin first, before the whole vehicle broke apart. It was a very tragic day to say the least in the Jersey Shore area of New Jersey.
