Father Attacks Daughter's Kidnapper

E. Wright

As Phylicia Bolt-Charles (16) climbs into her 2003 green Infinity to visit her brother, she sees a man running towards her. Instinctively, she rolls up her windows and locks her door. The man, later identified as Dino Liberto, holds a gun to the window and demands to be let inside the vehicle.

Once Phylicia allowed Liberto into the car, he forced her to drive around at gunpoint. He tells her he needs money, but Phylicia had not brought her wallet since her brother lived only two blocks away from her house. At this time, Liberto demands she return home to retrieve some money for him. She obliges.

While Liberto and Phylicia enter her house, Phylicia's father, Joseph Charles, hears some commotion at his front door. As he walks out of his kitchen he hears his daughter pleading "Don't hurt me, don't hurt me."

Realizing Liberto was holding a gun to his daughter's back, Joseph charged at the man, who then turned the gun on him. Joseph knocked the gun from Liberto's had and followed him back outside, fighting him every step of the way. After being thrown over a hedge, Liberto ran off and stole a boat, crossing Lafitte Waterway. Phylicia had already called for help, and soon afterwards the Charlotte County Sheriff's deputies had arrested Dino Liberto by force.

A father's rage helped Joseph fight an armed man, and he had done it with his bare hands. Joseph claims that something just went off in him when he saw his daughter being held at gunpoint. It later turned out that the gun was a fake, but neither Joseph or his daughter had known that.

Liberto's sister claims that Dino, a master electrician and college graduate, has never been the same since he was prescribed Oxy-Contin, Xanax, and Soma after an accident. She wants everyone to know that it's the medicine that has changed him and he'd been crying out for help. Earlier in the day Dino and his girlfriend had gotten into a fight and he began drinking, which his sister believes set him off.

Dino Liberto sits in the Charlotte County jail and is being held without bond. He is charged with kidnapping, carjacking, two counts of robbery with a firearm, grand theft, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, and driving on a suspended license. The last four charges stem from Liberto stealing a car from a Publix parking lot earlier the same day.

Joseph and Phylicia do not have any reported injuries due to the attack.

Hmm, the police officer left out that part. But I'm very glad the father was still home when they went back. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Good article, but what isn't mention here is that it was the daughter who really saved herself (HeraldTribune.com : "Charlotte girl and dad foil kidnapping"). She tricked the kidnapper (who wanted her to go to the bank and withdraw money) into believing she needed to go back home for her credit card in order to withdraw money from the bank, and began yelling, "don't hurt me" in order to alert her dad to her predicament. As a side note, should anyone be faced with a kidnapping scenario like this in their lives, the experts recommend leaving the doors locked and the windows up and attempting to drive away while making noise such as honking the horn. Most potential kidnappers or carjackers will run rather than pursue the intended victim and chance the increased likelihood of getting caught.

Talk about courage in face of (possible) danger. Sure, the gun was fake, but it's the principal that counts. 'Course, I'm glad that it wasn't a real one because that story might not have ended so well otherwise. Nice article!

Whoa! Great article and well-written-- 5 stars. Glad her father had his wits about him to defend his young. I like to think that I'd do the same for my kids or my hubby would.

Geez, criminals do horrid things and then want people to be understanding because they were on drugs or depressed. It may be a factor but at the end of the day if they could think to do a crime, they could think not to do a crime. Glad to see the young lady and her dad are ok. Great article!

    Go, Dad!
