Father Murders His 2-Year Old Child in Pittsburgh Because the Toddler Wouldn't Sleep

Rico Porter
Just when you think things can get no worse than they already are something like this happens. A man angry with his infant child's refusal to go to sleep knocked her out and carried her out into the cold to be left to die. The local police found the body of Nyia Miangel Page, age 2, in an abandoned playground about 3 blocks from her home. Police indicated that it appears she had gotten up and wandered around before she died due to the tiny footprints left in the snow.

This is a very heart breaking story. How can a parent do such a thing to such a small toddler that lacks the ability to properly defend or protect their own well being? What and where were the people in the community while this was happening? Didn't anyone hear this little girl's cries?

Her killer which happens to be her father, William Lorenzo Page, 23, of the Braddock section of Pittsburgh, was arrested Wednesday on charges of criminal homicide, kidnapping, filing false reports as well as simple assault. He has been in custody since Sunday, When he was charged with sexually assaulting and abusing another child shortly before he killed his own daughter Nyia Miangel Page.

He is still in jail where he belongs without bail. Page told police that he woke up early Saturday and found the girl awake and playing near a mirror in the hallway, according to the criminal complaint filed Wednesday night. He stated he had gotten mad when the girl wouldn't go back to bed so he hit her so hard he knocked her unconscious. He then stated he had taken the girl outside wrapped in a sheet and left her, still breathing, beside some railroad tracks close to a bridge.

Police as well as some local citizens searched but were unsuccessful in finding the girl in time. An autopsy determined that Nyia died of hypothermia, but ruled it a homicide because of the circumstances of the case. Investigators said that it seems impossible for the child to carry herself up 17 frozen abandoned playground step on a wooded knoll to the spot where which she died.

I am awe struck to think as to how long the child was outside in 2 degree weather wearing only a sweater and a diaper, could have survived. Due to her size and physical immobility, she would have been rendered incapacitated very fast. Allegheny Medical Examiner stated that she was frozen when she was found which indicates that she was outside for a long time.

Police had performed a search of the residence which revealed some bloody items which belong to the suspect. Found was a T-shirt, a Pittsburgh Steelers "terrible Towel" all wear found in the suspect Page's basement and appeared to have dried blood stains.

I had wrote an article about the no spanking law and now I somewhat have a different feeling about it due to situations like this. What can we do as a society of people to curb this child abuse, molestation and murder? We are living in times where it seems like certain individuals want to test our family values. We must work as a whole to stop this. The No Child Left Behind idea is great but we as American citizen need to participate also in our own communities.

There are things that we as citizens neglect to learn and that is, info about our neighbors. Knowing your neighbors can save not only your life but theirs as well. Let all the kids in the community know about safe precautions as well as letting parents know that if it's too hard for them that they have help. Look people we need to stop pointing the figure at someone else to protect us and start pointing that same figure at ourselves as the one to start getting ours, mines, and your communities together to protect everyone. Thanks for reading.

This is very sad indeed. I will never understand how someone can look at a child and do anything to hurt them.
