For this craft you will need:
A canvas barbecue apron
Fabric paints - various colors
Fabric stamps
Paintbrushes - from small to large
Begin by protecting the area that the children will do the craft. Cover the area with newspaper and make sure the children are wearing clothing that you don't mind if it gets a little fabric paint on it. Most paint will come right off if it is put in the washing machine quickly anyway.
A great design for this craft is something like "#1 Dad!" that you can write using the fabric stamps. It is easy to find fabric stamps that offer letters and numbers. These will look clean and attractive on the barbecue apron. If Dad has a nickname when he barbecues or anything else - you could also put this on the apron.
This craft uses fabric paint. Fabric paint will easily paint on any fabric. This includes the fabric of the clothing that you are wearing while you are painting any items! Encourage children to work carefully and slowly to get the best results and to not get paint on themselves. It is ideal to do this craft wearing old t-shirts that they don't mind getting paint on. Smaller children will need supervision with this craft.
Set out the fabric stamps and see which stamps you would like to use. Some stamps may be shapes or designs. Others will be objects or animals. Smaller children may have lots of fun stamping over and over with certain stamps to get a fun design on the apron. Let them practice first on a piece of paper.
Let the children paint designs on the apron. They could paint smiley faces or a sun with a rainbow. If there is more than one child, make sure they each get a chance to do something special with the apron.
Set the barbecue apron out to dry. It should be dry within several hours. Once it is dry you can gift wrap it and give it to Dad for Father's Day. Be sure to make him a nice card, and get ready to have hamburgers and hotdogs on the grill!

Ah, I see you haven't written for awhile. Shucks. I was looking forward to your new work! Any chance you may start back up?
What a terrific idea for a very well thought out Father's Day gift. Wish my children were small again so we could try this one out.
Cool idea!
This is a very nice idea :)
