Father's Day Crafts for Kids: Hand Painted Silk Tie

Ann Siper
Looking for a fun and affordable Father's Day Craft kids can make and give to Dad as a gift? Well, this sweet and super affordable Father's Day hand painted tie is perfect for Dad!

You can buy a pre made silk tie for $11 at www.dickblick.com or at you local art supply store. I have also found plain silk ties perfect or this father's day craft at Dharma Trading Company online.

This simple hand painted silk tie Father's Day craft project is a great way for kids to make a homemade gift for Dad and for Mom to save money.

To make a hand painted silk tie for Father's Day you will need:

Silk Tie
Silk Paint
Gutta
Paper
Paint brushes
Gutta squeeze bottle and metal applicator tip

Now, the first step is to lay out your plain paper. Lay it out on your dining room table. Now, have the kids take their silk tie and trace it onto the paper.

This will be their sounding board to draw out the designs or patterns they want to create on their hand painted father's day tie.

The designs can be anything the kids want! Simple stripes, polka dots, or more elaborate drawings.

Now, you need to transfer your designs onto the tie. You can either let the kids work freehand and keep their drawing nearby for inspiration or let them use a fabric pen to draw out the designs onto the tie. The fabric pen will disappear off the tie eventually, leaving only their painted designs. You can buy these at any fabric store!

Now, start tracing your pattern or design on with your gutta or water based resist. This can be bought at Dick Blick or Dharma Trading Co. as well. You can use black to make a more cartoon look or clear for older kids who may want to create more intricate designs.

Let this dry.

Now, start painting on your silk paints onto the Father's Day tie.

Let this dry when you have finished painting the silk tie.

Now, turn the Father's Day tie over and have the kids repeat this whole process on the back of the tie.

The Gutta should dry in about 30 minutes; the silk paints as well should dry very quickly. So, this easy Father's Day craft can be completed in one day or in two classes at school.

Overall the skill level is easy and the whole project should cost you less than $20 per tie, this number will drop significantly if you have more than one kid making more than one tie.

Tip: If you like the sounds of this Father's Day craft project, but are intimidated by the idea of silk painting, check out Dharma Trading Company online, they have some great tutorials as well as HGTV!

Trust me, you will love making this easy Father's Day craft as much as the kids and even might find a new art form you love! Silk painting is easy and so fun!
