Fathers Day Poems

Shana Box
Fathers Day is about honoring Fathers for the love and experience they contribute to our lives. And while you could spend hundreds of dollars showing your dad how much you love and appreciate him, sometimes all you need are a few simple words expressing what is in your heart. A Fathers Day poem could be just the perfect gift!

A popular yet traditional type of poem is Haiku, which originated in Japan. The modern Haiku can be formerly dated back to 1892. Although they were most likely written and not documented as far back as the 15th century. (www.toyomasu.com) There are two typical elements of a Haiku, the division of 17 syllables into 3 groups of 5, 7, and 5. They are easy to write and make for a wonderful Fathers Day poem.

Daddy's hand

His hands, large and warm
enjoying the journey
reach down picks me up

Acrostic is also a great option for a Fathers Day Poem. An Acrostic is when you take a word or phrase, such as Fathers Day and write it vertically. Then use each letter to start a line for the poem.

Fun and loving
At times he is stern
This is my dad
Helping me learn
Ending my fears
Righting my wrongs
Selflessly
Drying my tears
Always
Young at heart

A Limerick can also be fun to play with, especially for a Dad with a great sense of humor. Limericks typically run about 5 lines and follow an aa bb aa rhyme scheme.

There once was a Dad from Nantucket
who would never say to his family....

Well, you get the point!

All in all, poems for Fathers Day can be a sweet way to say, I love you Dad!
