Father's Day: Ways to Celebrate and Layouts for MySpace

Jessica Ann
There are several notions of how the very first Father's Day came to be. One idea is that the first Father's Day was held on July 5, 1908, celebrated after a mine explosion in West Virginia killed 361 men. Another theory of inspiration was to celebrate fathers after the first Mother's Day was celebrated two months earlier. However, I would say my favorite position on where and when the first father's day was held is that it was proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, civil war veteran, William Smart, raised his six children as a single parent and she wanted to express her appreciation for her father. Thus, the first Father's Day was to be held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed that Father's Day was to be held on the third Sunday of June and it wasn't until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon, that it became an officially recognized holiday. Many countries celebrate Father's Day on several other dates, butthe majority recognize it as the third Sunday in June.

The best thing you can do for dad on this, his day, is to let him have his day. I think he would be most appreciative if you just gave a simple call and thanked him for all he's ever done. Need to go a little further then offer to do his yardwork for the day, maybe help him out on a home project or repair. If you have more time and dad is up for it, then have some of his friends over and throw a backyard barbecue for them. Just make sure you clean it up, don't leave it for dad to do. Most importantly though is just spend a little time to show how much he means to you, because you never know when that chance will slip away. It's easier to swallow your pride then live with regret so make sure you make the effort this Father's Day.

Since I am one who always changes MySpace page to go with the holidays, among other things, I looked into Father's Day layouts and graphics. Unfortunately, there are very few layouts for this holiday, so the links below will take you right to what I've found and other ideas, such as backgrounds and graphics.

For an adorable Father's Day layout with a father's hand holding his baby's hand click here. It's a very sweet and simple layout. Another choice I found is a father and son sitting on a rock overlooking the ocean. If you want to take a look at that one, click here. Another site to try is wonderlayouts where there are a half dozen really cute layouts. These are a little more juvenile, so maybe the kids could use these as a tribute to dad on their MySpace page. Since the options are limited on Father's Day layouts, another way to go is try satisfaction.com and choose a Family Guy layout. I'm guessing there are lots of fathers who watch this show, because it's still on television. Then there's also the dad of all dads, Homer Simpson, and you can find a layout here with him. If all else fails, then how about making your own layout if you're feeling a little creative. It really isn't that difficult and at layouts-graphics it will walk you right through it. Just add a photo of your dad or of both of you and pick your other options on how you want your layout to look. It will generate a code for you to copy and paste in your About Me section.

One last place to try is funmunch.com where you can get simple backgrounds as opposed to layouts. It still easy to use by copying and pasting the code. However, these backgrounds are also available in layouts if you prefer. Keep in mind that backgrounds do not give you contact boxes, etc. so you would have to do those separately and I could not find any that are specific for Father's Day. The choices here, whether you go with layouts or backgrounds are pretty plain with sayings such as Happy Father's Day, Love You Dad and even Super Dad.

Once you have your layout or background down you may want to try here for a great selection of graphics, many being poems and quotes about dads. Looking for something a little more sweet and touching, then check out the glitter graphics here. There's bound to be something there you will like.

Whatever you do this Father's Day, remember it's all about dad, so take out the trash before he has to ask!
