But a strange enigma occurs amid this sea of anti-fatherdom. In 1999, a young boy named Elian Gonzales was rescued by a pair of fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico, which his mother had died trying to escort him across. The young boy was given to the Coast Guard and was quickly handed over to his American dwelling family members who sought political asylum and refugee status, as was the custom for Cuban "rafters". All of this was a point of course - it was a foregone conclusion at this point that those who had braved the shark infested waters to Florida from Cuba had escaped the horrors of Castro's regime and were now welcome in the United States.
At this point all should have been well and over - until the ever elusive rights of the father suddenly set in. In the same nation that keeps men out of the abortion discussion, away from custody with their children and unable to prevent the life they created from being drained through a vacuum and sent off to scientific research there was suddenly a political torrent of favor for Juan Miguel Gonzales, who "only wanted his son back". The people of Miami flocked to support the 6-year old, fearing the consequences of the high profile youth being sent back to Castro where he would no doubt be indoctrinated and treated as a precipice for political grandstanding.
Sadly this was the case after American forces armed to the teeth stormed the Gonzales residence in Miami, kidnapped the child at gun point, and forcibly evicted him from a nation that had long stood its ground against the two-bit Cuban dictator and promised to be a refuge for fleeing Cubans. At this point, Elian states that he sees Castro as "not only a friend but a father" - a statement that alone all too well justifies the fears of the Cuban-Americans who swarmed to the young boy's defense.
Somewhere in the midst of this entire scandal America took a bizarre 180 degree U-Turn from it's normal stance of mother's wishes for her child above the father's - where the mother's clear intent to get her son across the waters of the Gulf were superseded because "his father" wanted to see and live with him. Apparently all one needs to get the father's case heard is a brutal Communist dictator to make a spectacle of the scenario and claim an aggrieved status to the United States government - now if only pro-life fathers were capable of such clout.

cont'd- so would they be concerned with what happens to the fetus afterwards?
I want to work with you here on the comparison to Elian, but I'm having difficulty since Elian wasn't physically dependent on his mom at his age for nutrients in order to physically continue to grow. What if medical technology was such that after an abortion, the fetus could be transplanted into some artificial environment for the remainder of gestation? Where do the mother's rights end? You don't just walk out of an abortion clinic with a jar of fetal contents, so after an abortion, the medical community can do whatever they want with the remains. If you have your gallbladder out, you don't just go home with the organ in a jar of formaldehyde, although I did manage to get my wisdom teeth, then a few years later threw them out. If such artificial gestational means existed, could a father have rights after that point? Perhaps. I wonder how many women would protest such a scenario. They're no longer pregnant following an abortion, which was the main objective, so would they be concerned
No Sharon, as I expressed in the original abortion article, I'm essentially only talking about "ideal situations", I'm not talking about infidelity situations, rape situations, incest situations - I agree those are all special circumstances that need special clauses in any law, but you can't get special circumstances as long as you deny the basic idea that a man can have a say over his child's life. Jennifer, no I've never had a girlfriend who had an abortion on me. It has, however, happened to a friend who was emotionally ruined as a result. Though I don't see how one CANNOT see the similarities in the topics here. It really was as simple as was presented: a mother wanted her son in Florida, the father wanted him back in Cuba, the U.S. government broke all traditions and laws, and sent him back to Cuba because the father wanted to.
Chadd - First and foremost, trying to compare an abortion issue with what happened with Elian Gonzales is apples and oranges.
Secondly, I find it difficult to converse with you about all of this because the argument you pose is highly simplistic. (Not to mention, you come at women with hostility and resentment, which leads me to believe that you had a girlfriend who had an abortion, and you're here to take it out on the women here who disagree with you. I'm sorry if I'm right.)
So would every woman seeking an abortion need written (or some other) approval prior to the procedure? Would the doctors have to ask if she informed the father? Or are you only suggesting this for married couples?
Well two important things when dealing with this particular issue. Firstly, and most importantly, I want a little consistency. If, as Sharon states, it is true that fathers have no rights, why did we send Elian Gonzales back to be brainwashed by Castro on the grounds that his father wanted to see him, against his mother's wishes? One cannot argue that a father has no rights over their child compared to the mother, and then break political asylum traditions on a father's wishes. Secondly, it's rather simple actually. The person most likely to be the father in a common relationship has a say in whether or not a child is aborted. If there's a shred of doubt, you have a paternity test when it's born, and then you have grounds for a divorce.
It's really difficult for me to see how a father's rights to stop abortion would effectively be enforced. Would it be a requirement for all women seeking an abortion to identify the father first before the procedure? I'm not even sure paternity can be confirmed that early on. Do I think there is some sadness surrounding the issue of abortion? Yes, but then again, I get sad every month at the loss of so many of my potential children. I can't get those eggs back, but I'm not ready to not use any form of contraception because I prefer to maintain my child's quality of life.
Hey, Chadd, it doesn't matter what you say because the few "women" who think it's ok to kill babies and deny fathers any right to that decision won't be swayed. You make an excellent point and I cannot tell you why our country will hand a child over to a father who wants to simmer it in communist beliefs, but a man who wants to take responsibility for his child and stop an abortion is evil and cannot exercise his paternal rights. It makes ZERO sense. Clinton...blick.
I'm glad someone remembers the SS era that was the Clinton-Reno time period. Some people like to say "OMFGZ BUSH IS A NAZI AND HE KILLS AMERICANS", and talk about his "unwarranted wire tappings", let's talking about Reno and Clinton's unwarranted invasions of private property and immolating of American citizens.
