You can get the look of real French Country Tile without paying for it. This hand painted tile rug would look great in a kitchen, bathroom, or even in a cozy den!
This Faux French Country Tile painted canvas floor mat is a great way to really transform your home in a matter of hours on a budget. You can temporarily replace existing rugs that are displayed all year long with this homemade Faux French Country Tile rug.
The best part is that since you are painting this Faux French Country Tile rug yourself you can really make it blend in with you existing home decor for a custom French Country handmade rug look!
To Make a Painted Faux French Country Tile Floor Rug You Will Need:
3 -4 Yards of Per primed Canvas
Acrylic paints (terra cotta colors, corn flower blue, and sunny yellow)
Polyurethane
Paint Brushes
Pencil
Painter's Tape
Duct Tape or No Sew
Paint trays
Paint rollers
Stencil of fleur de le
Start by cutting your canvas rug out to size. I cut mine 8X10 feet. You can make it as small as your want or larger if you choose. Other standard rugs sizes are 5X7', 3X5', and 9X12'. So you choose. You can also simply measure your floor space and make your own custom sized rug.
Fold in your rough edges about 1 inch towards the back of the canvas floor rug. You can simply duct tape these down since no one will see the underside of your painted French Country canvas floor rug. If you prefer though you can use a product like no sew.
When you iron down the edges though, make sure you place a rag between the primed canvas and your iron. The primer will melt and burn. It will also ruin your iron. You could also use fabric glue to hem the edge to even simply sew it down with a sewing machine.
Now, time to personalize your Faux French Country Tile canvas painted rug.
You need to paint the entire piece of canvas out in the color you would want to be your grout. A nice putty, gray, or sand color would be perfect with the terra cotta color tile we will be doing.
Roll this on, coating the rug evenly and let it dry.
Now, I like to use painters tape to tape of a five-inch border of "tiles" along the outside edges of the rug. Every five inches tape off like a 5 inched square tile for a border.
On the inside you can make slightly smaller tiles, or tiles that are turned on an angle to look like diamonds. This will really accent your fleur de les.
This is the time to get creative!
One of my favorite Faux French Country Tile looks is warm terra cotta. Grab a terra cotta pot while you are at Lowe's and take it to the paint section. Use it to pick your paint color.
You can simple tape off diamonds or square with your painter's tape. Paint the diamonds in terra cotta colors that coordinate.
You could also do warm yellow tiles alternating with royal blue tiles. A combination of blue and green diamonds are another alternative for a traditional French country look.
Paint on your diamonds, working over the blue painter's tape you laid down in your pattern.
Once the paint dries peel up the paint to reveal your Faux French Country Tile pattern.
Now, let this paint dry overnight. Lay your fleur de le stencil out on your first tile. Dab on your warm royal blue paint. If you use a different color tile you will need to choose what color to stencil in.
Now, I recommend painting every other diamond with a fleur de le centered in each tile.
Let these dry over night.
Once your paint has dried you need to apply a few coats of polyurethane to the painted canvas Faux French Country Tile floor mat. I recommend applying three coats following the instructions on your polyurethane.
Once the polyurethane has dried you are finished.
To clean your Painted Faux French Country Tile floor rug you can use a damp soapy sponge. Use a mild detergent and very little water and you should be fine.
