An Oktoberfest Bar-B-Que Bean Recipe, Good for All Picnics

Mazy Keller
I am not German, but mention Oktoberfest, and I'll be there. Trial and error taught me the Polka and yes, there needs to be sauerkraut on that Brat. Heck, it doesn't even need to be October, just mention bar-b-que and I'll be ready with napkin and fork in hand!

Whether grilling out or in, steaks or burgers, my Oktoberfest beans are great to cook or take along. I always ended up bringing the chips, cokes, or napkins to get-to-gethers until I found this recipe. Any skill level of cook can put this together, and the recipe doubles easily and the ingredients are usually on everyones kitchen shelves.

(Oh, these are not baked, so cooking outside on a fire or grill in a pot also works well).

MY BEANS for all occasions.

In large pot empty:
2 large cans of baked beans, your choice of brand. (I use the least expensive).

Next, dice the following and cook in a skillet as instructed:
1 medium onion, diced.
3-6 slices of bacon, diced and browned. (When bacon is almost done add the onion & brown in bacon grease).
(You can add more or less onion and/or bacon, depending on your personal taste. I don't thoroughly drain
this mixture, but I do drain off most of the grease).
When done browning and draining, add to the beans.

Now, measure and stir in the following ingredients into the pot with the beans, bacon and onions.
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup yellow mustard

And, the final ultimate ingredient ---- the ingredient that makes this recipe unforgettable.... ready??

Add 1 bottle of root beer! (Any brand will do).

Lastly, let your pot of beans simmer on the stove, grill or fire for 30 minutes.

In the past I have substituted the bacon with pulled pork, about 1/2 cup per can of beans. Put the pork into a skillet with a little oil (your choice) and brown slightly, then add onions as listed above and follow the rest of the recipe.

Everyone has their own preferences and favorites, and I do hope this recipe becomes one of yours. Bon Appetite!
