"Jingle Bells" with its merry chorus of "jingle bells, jingle all the way," is a favorite song of children at Christmas. I can remember my three-year-old brother trying to sing this song and making up words up for the ones he could not remember. He did not always have the right words, and he may have sung off-key, but his enthusiasm and heart are remembered forty years later.
"I Wanna Hippopotamus for Christmas" makes many children laugh because who would ever want a Hippo for Christmas? And this child has many valid reasons that a hippo is a great gift, such as Santa not having to use the dirty chimney, or that if mom' fears the hippo will eat the child; the teacher has said that hippos are vegetarians. One of the funniest versions recorded of this song was by the Three Stooges, my older brother's favorite comedy group.
"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)" has been around forever and a favorite song of many children. Each time Alvin is so busy trying to shake presents and see what he got for Christmas; David Seville has to holler "Alvin" to get his attention. We loved this song as kids and still love it. When we are together and this song plays, we will to sing along and share Christmas memories. Although I have to admit, sometimes I have the wrong lyrics as my young niece pointed out recently, its "plane that loops the loop" and not train that loops the loop.
"Santa Claus is coming to Town" reminds us that we must be good because Santa is coming with presents for us. Oh gosh, before Christmas, perhaps right after Thanksgiving, my parents would start to remind us to behave or Santa would leave us lumps of coal for Christmas. She would only have to mention Santa knew what we were doing, and we would immediately stop whatever we were doing. Although none of us received coal for Christmas, we were not willing to risk getting coal.
"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" is humorous Christmas song about a child who sneaks to take a peek at Santa only to find Mommy kissing Santa. Can you imagine the surprise on the face of a child who expected to see Santa and sees Mommy too? We would giggle as children trying to imagine our mother kissing Santa and loved this song.
"Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" is one of those songs we learn as children and never forget. As kids we used to add our special effects such as when we sang "you would even say it (the nose) glowed," we would add like a light bulb. We had our hand gestures we would use as we sang together. When I hear this song, I think of the hundreds of times we sang this song growing up.
"Frosty the Snowman" is a familiar and favorite children's Christmas song. This song is such a happy song that we used to sing loudly during the Christmas season. Who has not seen that classic cartoon "Frosty the Snowman?" Every time we saw that program as children, we knew Christmas was coming soon. As an adult, I continue to watch this cartoon because of the joy of the message about Christmas, being good and friendship.
"We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is a joyful wish for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Perhaps most of us have never eaten figgy pudding, but that point has never stopped us from singing this song. No one can ever have enough wishes for a wonderful Christmas or a joyful New Year.
"All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth," is a great song from my Christmas childhood. As one of eight children, someone was always missing a front tooth around Christmas time. This Christmas song is a fun song if you can manage to sing like that tooth is missing, with a slight whistle.
"Nuttin' for Christmas" is one of those amusing children's songs about naughtiness. This little boy has made an effort to be naughty before Christmas. We loved this song because the song is funny especially, the line "did a dance on mommy's plants, filled the sugar bowl with ants, somebody snitched on me." If any child deserved nothing or coal for Christmas, we agreed as children this one did because he was naughty.
