White Christmas (1954) Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye co-star as Wallace and Davis, a likable performing duo who joined forces after serving together in WWII. Viewers of all ages often join in to sing along with great songs like "Sisters", "Snow", and of course "White Christmas". Wallace and Davis meet up with romantic interests (sisters played by Rosemary Cloony and Vera Ellen) and meander along the twists and turns of a secret plot to assist a struggling retired General at the Holidays. There is not another Christmas film like it.
A Christmas Carol (various editions) Here you have choices. Unless you have some unhealthy aversion to Disney, watching Jim Carey's 2009 Disney version is a no-brainer this year, but whether it will find permanent home on lists like this one remains to be seen. If Disney just isn't your thing, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (1951) starring Alastair Sim has some brilliant performances and is considered by many to be the ultimate film adaptation. A personal favorite is Patrick Stewart's 1999 version. If you're in the mood for silliness (might not be best for the kids), nobody does it better than Bill Murray in Scrooged (1988).
The Grinch that Stole Christmas (1966), Frosty the Snowman (1969), Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (1964), and Charlie Brown Christmas (1965). An Animated Christmas movie festival for youngsters of all ages. I recommend big bowls of popcorn, favorite soft drinks all around, and these four animated classics, in the order listed.
The Homecoming: A Christmas Story (1971) Christmas during the depression and Daddy hasn't made it home through a snowstorm. Based on a true story, this one will warm your heart and remind you of what's important at this time of year.
Miracle on 34th Street (1994 or 1947) You pick which version to see, or better yet, alternate them, as both are excellent. Trying to prove or disprove Santa's existence in a court of law? What a great story line.
A Christmas Story (1983) You remember when Ralphie shoots his glasses out with his new Red Ryder BB gun, gets his tongue frozen to the flag pole and curses in front of mom? Remember the sexy-leg lamp and the fight where Ralphie nearly kills the neighborhood bully? Of course you do, unless you've never seen this classic. It's a must see.
