Favorite Christmas Songs and Best New Years' Eve Party Songs According to Teenagers: Survey Results

What Does Auld Lang Syne Mean Anyway?

Aly Adair
I was always surprised that my teenager daughter liked much of the same music I liked when I was in high school. Some of her favorite artists include Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Mamma Mia! The Movie songs by ABBA. I decided to ask high school students for a list of their favorite Christmas songs and New Year's Eve Party Songs. According to the survey results, teenagers love classic Christmas songs sung by legends like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Perry Como, along with modern artists like Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Josh Groban. Teenagers also love Auld Lang Syne and any song that includes the word "kiss" in it for their New Year's Eve Party Playlist. Most teenagers do not know what Auld Lang Syne means or what the actual words are in the traditional New Year's Eve song. Here is some help:

Auld Lang Syne literally means "old long ago" or in a more symbolic sense "the good old days." The public domain lyrics for the Scotish New Year's Eve classic song Auld Lang Syne from its first publication in 1796 are:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,

for auld lang syne,

we'll take a cup of kindness yet,

for auld lang syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and days of auld lang syne?

And here's a hand, my trusty friend

And gie's a hand o' thine

We'll tak' a cup o' kindness yet

For auld lang syne
