Bright Colors. Fall fashion is generally not known for its bright colors, more often relying instead on a palette of rich golds and oranges and deep greens and browns that match the natural hues of the season. This year, however, perhaps as an antidote to the dreariness of the 2009 economic environment, fashion collections are enlivened with plenty of splotches of vibrant color. Check out the fall 2009 designer collections for some color ideas. Standouts include Marc Jacobs turquoise ¾ length coat, shown with patterned turquoise and yellow tights; Narciso Rodiguez's lemon green slim suit, which is a classy look for office or day wear; and Tibi's skirted jacket in brilliant blue. If you want to set off and revitalize the basic pieces in your closet this fall, take a hint from these collections and add some color, perhaps an eye-popping neon pink cardigan sweater or a bright red sweater jacket (www1.talbots.com).
Slim Silhouettes. Skinny (and even super skinny) pants and pencil skirts are fashion basics in the fall 2009 collections, including the ultra skinny pants featured by Tibi, the slightly fuller but still closely fitted black slacks in Nicole Miller's collection, or Michael Kors slender skirt and belted top. Pair your favorite tops, sweaters and jackets with skinny pants and skirts in basic blacks, grays and browns for a new look that will take you from morning till night. Choose fabrics with a little stretch for the best fit and accessorize your tops with belts to define the waist. Also, don't forget to check out the denim department of your favorite clothing store, since skinny jeans, like J. Crew's matchstick jeans (www.jcrew.com), are a must for the fall 2009 wardrobe.
Layers. Layering is a classic look for fall and winter, but it has been taken a step further in fall 2009 collections with fur vests, sleeveless sheaths and flamboyant scarves. For a few not-so-ordinary layered looks, check out Rebecca Taylor's fur vest paired with a slim, patterned skirt; DKNY's dramatic black neck wrap that sets off a traffic-stopping red frock, and Lela Rose's high-necked sheath with cap sleeves. Other layering looks to try this fall include long cardigans in solids and patterns (try adding a wide belt for a great contemporary look) and short tweed, twill, wool or cotton jackets, especially skirted styles for a young, fun, sassy look.
