Favorite Summer Hobby: Hiking in Athens County, Ohio

Jolynne M Hudnell
With the warmer weather, I'm preparing for my favorite summer hobby '" hiking! I love to hike through the woods all through the year, but I do this more frequently in nicer weather. With the kids being out of school, we'll have more time to engage in this favorite summer hobby.

To prepare this year, I found my tennis shoes. Normally I wear dress shoes or boots, or I wear comfortable sandals. I like the soles of my gym shoes for hiking up and down steep inclines. I have both shorts and pants to use for hiking, depending on the trails chosen. I have also started saving bottles to fill with water when we go. I dug out my backpack to carry bottles of water, snacks and other items the kids or I may want to take while hiking.

Other items we may take this year include a picnic lunch, depending on how long the trail we choose happens to be. Other times, we may want to bring towels and bathing suits if we are going to hike where there is a lake for swimming, such as Strouds Run State Park in Athens, Ohio.

Hiking costs very little money, as it is mostly for gas to get there and any snacks or food we like to take. If the area we are going to hike in has a lot of open areas, I like to bring sunscreen for the kids so they don't get sunburned.

Although I like to hike alone at times, with the kids out of school they will be going with me a lot this summer. I plan to take the kids hiking at least once a week, but we have been know to go as often as four times in a week depending on the weather and other activities that we would like to do during the week.

More than likely we will not travel out of the county this year to go hiking as Athens County in Ohio has a lot of places both large and small that offer trails to go hiking in the woods. I can also hike near my own home as there are pockets of woods all over the area I live in. Many of the woods with hiking trails lead to cemeteries or have very old, small cemeteries with just a few family plots.

This summer, without having to travel a lot, the kids and I will get to enjoy hiking through the woods quite frequently through the scenic foothills of the Appalachians in Athens County, Ohio.

Good for you! It's too hot in the summer to do much hiking around here, however.

I agree with Laura, super. What a wonderful way to spend part of the summer.
