Favorite TV Commercial Songs

Music Discovered from Ads

Cheryl Hedlund
Ever had that experience watching a commercial and the music grabs you? A song you've never heard before and you must know what it is. Sometimes you can't remember what the product was but the melody stays with you. Who is that artist? You won't be satisfied until you know. Let me share my favorite TV commercial songs.

Music Box (JC Penney)
"Music Box" by Regina Spektor was used in a JC Penney commercial, part of their "Every Day Matters" campaign. The ad shows busy modern life in a surreal style. A woman enters a phone booth which fills up and overflows with water. Not to worry, she steps out of the file cabinet into her office. "Music Box" is a quirky song with a theme that fits the idea of being on an office tread mill and trying to break free. Not sure what that has to do with shopping at Penney's, but it is a fun song and an entertaining commercial to watch. It is a track on her album "Begin to Hope", released in 2006.

Love is You (Nivea)
A Nivea Smooth Sensations commercial features a jazzy soul song, "Love is You" by R&B artist Chrisette Michele. Her voice has a unique, almost growly quality which gives the song a slight edge. It appears on her 2007 album titled, "I Am".

New Soul (Macbook Air)
Yael Naim sings "New Soul" for the Macbook Air commercial currently airing. The catchy indie pop tune makes you feel good. Her video for the song is on Youtube. It is on her 2007 self-titled debut album and is available as a single.

Coffee Shop (DeBeers)
"Yes there's a chance that I've fallen quite hard over you. I've seen the paths that your eyes wander down. I wanna come too". These are lines from Landon Pigg's song, "Falling in Love in a Coffee Shop". It appears in a DeBeers diamond ad. The gentle melody with touching but sincere sounding words drew me immediately. It has been released as a single on iTunes. Currently on Landon Pigg's Myspace page you can listen to the song and watch a feed of the commercial from Youtube.

I Don't Love You Much, Do I (Nature's Own)
Guy Clark and Emmylou Harris originally sang the song on the album "Boats to Build". Nature's Own used studio musicians to cover a version for its bread commercial. The words are sweet and the folky country tune makes you want to sing along. Emmylou's 2007 album, "Songbird: Rare Tracks and Forgotten Gems" has the original recording remastered.

Voila (Hilton)
Michael Tolcher sing this energetic alternative rock pop song featured in Hilton's "A to B" campaign. "Voila" gives a positive feeling and the infectious beat makes you want to dance. It was written for Hilton and has not been released on any album. Watch the commercial on Youtube.

If you want to know how to track down music you've heard, here is a search strategy and some websites that will help you identify songs from TV. Have fun sleuthing and discovering new music. Hope you enjoy some of my favorite commercial songs.

I really liked this list and it made me listen to much of the music again, at sites where I could find it online, thanks to your suggestions for the music and the commercials they accompanied.
