1) Christine - Adventures of Old Christine
2) Dr. Miranda Bailey on Grey's Anatomy
3) Barbara Hendrickson on Big Love
4) Marge Simpson on The Simpsons
Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) on Adventures of Old Christine relates to me on a weekly basis. Sometimes I think she's gotten the story from me. This show makes me realize that I can't keep up with the times. No matter how hard I try to be a "cool mom", I'm out of date somehow. Just as she routinely embarrasses her son Richie, and tends to be an overprotective mother, I do the same with my eighteen year old live-in stepson. Though her adventures are mimicked and tend to be funny, it's a sad reminder of these real life "tender moments" that are truly embarrassing. I love the show as it makes me feel a little better and realize I'm really not that alone. She often confides in her best friend Barb, as I do my best friend Bonnie.
Dr. Miranda Bailey (played by Chandra Wilson) on Grey's Anatomy, is the classic working mom. I relate to her because I have a stressful day-into-night job. Often leaving her child with her husband, she is addicted to her professional career. This paints an all too realistic picture of how working moms like me, miss those special moments. Work seems to suck up all of Dr. Bailey's energy as it does mine. When she does get time with her children however, she makes the best of it. You will often see Dr. Bailey bringing her child into work, and this is again part of the give and take of a stressful career. I salute you Dr. Bailey, you are not alone.
Barbara Hendrickson on Big Love (played by Jeanne Tripplehorn) is the classic do-it-all patriarch mom. She is the one solid link that holds her entire family (in this case consisting of three wives and possibly adding a fourth) together. Barbara is often pulled in many different directions, much like myself. She has to balance so many things that it's amazing and much like myself, I often wonder how she pulls it off. She not only runs her household, raises her children, and makes sure her husband and everyone else is happy. Though she is highly organized, she often neglects her own needs and happiness in the process. Welcome to my reality.
Marge Simpson (voice of Julie Kavner) on The Simpsons is someone else I can relate to. Marge is the classic stable mom who puts up with the crazy antics of her family and maintains the calmness (most of the time) as Mrs. Homer Simpson. She overlooks most of the imperfections that surround her and does her motherly duties for her family. I relate to this completely, sometimes I just have to step back and say, this is a Simpsons moment. Just when you think it can't get any crazier, it does. Though this is a cartoon, I can only imagine if some of these story plots were true.
