Every time I go in it is like hunting for hidden treasures. Some book stacks are taller than me. Book turnover is very high. Books coming through the door are stacked behind the register. Many shelves are lined two deep. The estimated number of volumes in the store is an impressive 100,000 plus. Paperbacks make up a large percentage of the collection. They do carry hard back, out of print and rare editions.
Larry Kennedy has owned this store for 20 years. The store will soon sport a newly developed web-page that will be a great addition to the business. I have always found the store cozy. The isles are a bit narrow. One feature I really enjoy is they take books in trade, that definitely helps stretch my book dollars. "The Book Cellar" is open 6 days a week and can be contacted at 406-248-4284.
My other favorite is "A Few Books More..." Tom Vanek is the proprietor and started this gem 7 years ago. It is very spacious and the store is well laid out. They have some big comfortable leather seats to settle into while making your selections. Becky Flint an associate at the store is very helpful and has a keen memory for titles.
The store has many rare and out of print titles. While browsing the children's section I found some vintage "Tom Swift", "|The Boy Scouts", "Hardy Boys". I even found a 1960 McCall's magazine complete with Betsy McCall paper doll. She graced each edition of the older McCall magazines and was a childhood favorite.
"A Few Books More..." has a section of new books by regional and local authors. One drawback to this store is the limited parking. Becky told me they are always happy to help customers by phone and have great success locating special requests. They are located at 520 Nth 32nd St and are open 6 days a week. You can call them at 1-877-482-6357.
I really like both stores and have spent many enjoyable hours reading books I've found on their shelves.
