TEAM ANALYSIS: Favre lost 4 of the last 5 games in 2008 and let the Jets playoff hopes down when he turned the ball over 3 times in the final loss of the season to the Dolphins. On the other hand, 7 of the 10 Packer losses were on a combined total of 21 points.
Next, let's look at the individual statistics for both quarterbacks. Phillip River's stats are included since he led the AFC in three categories (but did not make the Pro-Bowl).
Statistic Rodgers (NFC) Favre (AFC) Rivers (AFC)
Rating 96.9 (#3) 81.0 (#9) 105.5 (#1)
Completions 341 (#3) 343 (#3) 312 (#7)
Attempts 536 (#4) 522 (#4) 478 (#6)
Percentage 63.6 (#4) 65.7 (#4) 65.3 (#6)
Yards 4038 (#3) 3472 (#7) 4009 (#2)
TD 28 (#3) 22 (#4) 34 (#1)
Interceptions 13 (#5) 22 (Last) 11 (Best)
Rodgers clearly has better statistics, but did not make the Pro-Bowl. He has taken a "whipping" through the season for not leading the Packers to a fourth-quarter comeback victory (remember 7 by 21?). However, Rodgers finished his first season as a starter with a sturdy showing. He completed 21 of 31 for 308 yards and three touchdowns, compiling a passer rating of 132.2, his best of the season. Now with a full season under his belt and youth on his side, we can see that Rodgers and Green Bay are poised to turn it around in 2009.
Next, compare the NFC statistics for Favre and Rivers. Rivers leads 3 main categories (Ratings, TDs, and (least) Interceptions). He was second in Yardage and only 0.2% points behind Favre in Percentage, yet he did not make the Pro-Bowl. This is clearly a parting gift for Brett as any Sports fan can see that he has overstayed his welcome in the NFL.
Acquiring Brett Favre, on its surface, looked like a good idea at the time. But the move ended in utter failure for the New York Jets. To add insult to injury, the Jets let go of Chad Pennington who not only beat the Jets in the last game of the season but also led the Dolphins to an 11 and 5 record to clinch their division and a spot in the playoffs.
