Faygo Celebrates 100 Years

Janice Villa
This Sunday, November 4th, 2007, Faygo Beverages turns 100 years old. Their company, located on Gratiot Ave, in Detroit , Michigan, has been at the same location since 1935. It was founded in 1907 by two Russian immigrant bakers, named Ben and Perry Feigenson. They knew nothing about the carbonated beverage business when they started the company. They based their original flavors of Faygo on recipes used for their cake frostings, such as fruit punch, strawberry and grape.

The company changed it's name from Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works to Faygo in 1921, possibly because it would be expensive to emboss the original name Feigenson Brothers Bottling Works, on the glass bottles. In 1987 Faygo was bought by the National Beverage Corporation in Florida.

Faygo comes in 53 different flavors and it is available in 30 states. Many of the flavors are long time favorites but there has been some flops. A couple of the failed flavors are Faygo Moonshine and Dr. Faygo. Every year Faygo promises to release two or three new flavors. To celebrate this benchmark of 100 years, Faygo is releasing a new flavor called Centennial Soda. It is a blueberry creme soda.
