FCC Chairman Michael Copps Wants to Regulate American Media
This Opinion Piece on FCC Chairman Michael Copps was Previously Discussed on Gather.Com
In a recent BBC interview, between FCC Chairman Michael Copps and a BBC reporter, Copps states with classic doublespeak that American media is in an "hour of grave peril," and suffering from a form of "substance abuse" in the lack of quality journalistic investigation. Copps also claims our media is "not producing the body of news that we were five years, ten years, fifteen years ago." Is he talking about real news, or news that he would approve of? The only thing obvious is he is a bureaucrat in a position of power, so take a guess.
Liberals and conservatives alike should be outraged by FCC Chairman Michael Copps disgusting statements.
Copps goes on to claim that we are in need of the "essential news and information (we) need to have, in order to make an intelligent decision about the future direction of their country." So, who would get to decide what's "essential?" Bureaucrats like him? His employees? Or will it be other government workers who have eschewed the competitive free market for the comfortable security of a profession based upon the taxes taken, by gun-backed force, from people who earn their way?
In the next question from the unidentified BBC reporter, she raises his proposal of a "public value test." Rightly, Copps is asked if this "raises the specter of over-government control of information." In true classic bureaucrat style, Copps states (with an incorrect use of the word) that America has had "in recent years an abberation where we have had no oversight of the media." When, in truth, the American press is not to be unhindered in the first place. Mr Copps makes an attempt to paint the illusion of media and a free press somehow slipping out from under the thumb of FCC politicos and bureaucrats recently. When in truth, what we Americans have had recently, is a plague of power-hungry government officials, who would limit information and reporting to that which they would approve. What we have had is a few decades of power-hungry oligarchs who want to limit any news which makes them look bad. (Hint: It's not the news that makes them look bad. It's their actions and behaviors that make them look bad.)
The BBC reporter challenges FCC Chairman Copps about whose values they're discussing with, "What if my values aren't your values?" He then uses the standard, DC, non-answer method of not answering what she asked, but rather, the question he wanted her to ask to deftly side-step the question. The non-sequitur is the hallmark of politicians and bureaucrats world-wide, being their only available tool of information control. Copps uses it well, but fails in talking way too much in his answer, thereby revealing his weaseling nature. See for yourself in the video in this discussion on Gather.
Did you catch what FCC chairman Copps had to say about the Internet?
If not, go back and listen again. He states there are no working models of the Internet with "real, investigative journalism, which is fast disappearing." Does he mean like Julian Assange, and Wikileaks? Or, perhaps he is referencing the staff of Alex Jones, and infowars? Because from all that can be determined there, it seems the US government hates "real investigative journalism." Even Russia's Pravda is decrying the American government and the FCC for stifling a free press lately. Pravda?!
FCC chairman Michael Copps is incorrect. The American press and media needs less control and oversight.
Those in power who believe that controlling what information is shared with the American people will protect their ensconced positions of taxpayer-funded power, deserve nothing more than removal from said position. They just can't be trusted with power. It's a form of "substance abuse," Mr Copps. "We, the People" need to regulate you. Just because you mention net neutrality, does not mean the FCC can be trusted to regulate American media.

Post a CommentI've been hearing random rumors about this so called regulation for years. Some call it necessary while others call it scare tactics. Either way, since I'm such an ignoramus on the topic, I'm just gonna come clean here.. also, I've not received any e-mails about you publishing. Thought you decided to take a break for the holidays.
The FCC is just another power-mongering federal agency seeking more influence for itself and control over people's exchange of information. Their aim is to support the agenda and quiet the naysayers. Government expand-and-control has got to go, lest those of us who say 'no' be taken away in the night.
Thanks for the noms guys. But this is just a DO piece.
Thanks for the infromaTion. I nominated this article too.
Good report.
The FCC has been disgusting for years.
Great work Don and I too am nominating it. Great work Don.
Our country is going backwards not forwards and we will sometime in the near future no longer be that super power we have been known to be, we will be a country like no other. Controlled by the men and women who sit in Washington and their sick/bent ideas so they can fill their pockets with gold and build themselves those golden castles like they found in Iraq.
Charlie, you never lost me.
It will eventually happen and we'll just get one side of the story like the old Soviet Union. Sad! I miss you as a friend but I still check in on your work. I just don't always comment to keep myself out of trouble with certain people (not you).
