FDA Announces Nestle Toll House Voluntary Recall
Don't Eat Raw Cookie Dough!
According to Nestle USA, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are conducting an investigation into reported E. coli contamination which may be related to the consumption of raw cookie dough.
According to the FDA press release regarding the Nestle Toll House recall, Nestle USA is cooperating with the FDA and CDC investigation into reported cases of illness. Since March 2009, there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states.
Nestle Toll House Products Under Recall
Nestle Toll House products which are being recalled include Nestle Toll House Cookie and Brownie Dough Bars, Cookie Dough Tubs, Tube (Chub) Dough, Ultimates Cookie Bar Dough, Limited Edition Cookie Dough items, and Seasonal Cookie Dough. Nestle Toll House Recall: Symptoms of E. coli
According to the FDA, symptoms of E. coli contamination include abdominal cramping, vomiting and a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. The FDA reports that most healthy adults recover within a week, but E. coli can cause serious kidney damage and even death in young children and the elderly.
FDA Says 'Don't Eat Raw Cookie Dough', But Cookie Dough Ice Cream is Okay
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are warning consumers not to eat Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough products due to the risk of E. coli contamination.
The reason only Nestle Toll House's raw cookie and brownie dough products are being recalled is due to some consumers' proclivity to eating these cookie dough products without first baking them.
The idea of consuming raw cookie dough has always made me feel queasy. However, it is a popular 'snack', leading to other cookie dough products such as cookie dough ice cream.
Those having second thoughts about such delicious ice cream treats such as cookie dough ice cream shouldn't worry though. According to the FDA, cookie dough ice cream products are made with specially-produced cookie dough that's pasteurized, so cookie dough ice cream is safe to eat.

I got an automated call from CostCo today, alerting me to this recall. I purchased a tub of Nestle Toll House cookie dough there several months ago. We already finished all the dough--we never eat it raw, and this is why!

Very interesting, I wonder how e coli, an animal bacteria, got into cookie dough. The only thing I can think of is through the eggs. This is the first I have heard about this, great job, Heather!
