FDA Continues to Delay Gluten Free Labeling Regulations

So Why Not Have a Party with Gluten Free Cake?

Delayed gluten free labeling regulations are being challenged according to a recent March 29th Yahoo news Power Web report. Great news for those of us who neurotically have to read labels that we know are sometimes ambiguous regarding things like the cross contamination that occurs in grain mills, along with various other culprits that make what seems to be harmless, a potentially dire digestive emergency.

According to the Yahoo news power web report, stats like 2004 sales reaching $560 million dollars, projecting in 2012 to 2.6 billion, is reality for gluten free food products touting this label. However, the negative health consequences from ingredients that are likely to be in contact with gluten still remain, due to loose standards on gluten free labeling regulations.

The 7 year delay in moving forward has now become a little too long for those in the gluten free community, so they've thought of a good way to convey that message by planning an event to promote awareness of the FDA's procrastination to be held on May 4th 2011 at the Embassy Suites Convention Center in Washington D.C.

Dr. Alessio Fasano, a speaker planned for the Washington D.C. event, from Maryland's University for Celiac Research and a well respected leader in research regarding celiac and gluten intolerance, emphasized the significance of correct labeling due to the seriousness of gluten related diseases and their symptoms as being paramount.

I guess it takes someone like Dr. Fasano or another gluten free person to understand how bad it can get for someone like myself who thinks their eating something gluten free, only to find out an hour later that you're gravely ill from grains or other foods that are in reality manufactured with gluten products. I consider myself one of the lucky ones in this regard because I happen to have a background in alternative health and wellness so I'm aware of this fact. Many aren't and are at the mercy of the labels.

One of the features at this gluten free event is the baking of the largest gluten free cake. Sounds like a yummy event as well as one that should bring some awareness to tighter gluten free label regulations for those of us that desperately need it.
