FDA Issues Warning About Chicken Jerky Products for Dogs

Sunshine Wilson

The Food and Drug Administration has released a warning about chicken jerky products for dogs that have been made in China. Since no individual brands or products have been named, dog owners should check the packaging of any chicken jerky products for dogs that they may have.

The FDA has stated that these chicken jerky products may cause Fanconi syndrome in dogs. In 2011, so far, the FDA has been notified of 70 accounts of Fanconi-like symptoms and test results from veterinarians and dog owners who have used chicken jerky products from China.

Fanconi syndrome is a disorder which affects the kidneys. Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients which should be reabsorbed back into the dog's body are instead excreted, causing dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Symptoms of Fanconi syndrome are increased consumption of water, excessive urination, diminished appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lethargy.

The FDA reports that Fanconi syndrome symptoms may occur within hours of ingesting chicken jerky products from China. Although the majority of dogs have recovered with treatment, several deaths have taken place.

The FDA is currently testing samples of chicken jerky products for dogs from China to determine what contaminants may be contained in the products.

The FDA has advised dog owners that these chicken jerky products are meant not to replace their dog's meals, but should be used as occasional treats in the diet. In addition, the FDA suggests that dog owners observe their dogs carefully after ingestion of these products.

However, many dog owners may decide to discard any chicken jerky products for dogs that they may have on hand and instead offer their dogs a more nutritious and safer product.

If you’re looking for SAFE, REAL ‘American Made’ chicken jerky for dogs or cats, we started making our own Chicken Jerky for our 3 dogs after we ran across the FDA warning of 2008 about Chinese chicken treats making dogs sick or killing them. It turned into a cottage "Mom & Pop" business and we now sell our TriPom Chews online and in 20 stores in the New England area. Our products are the only homemade, handmade, ‘Maine Made’, ‘American Made’ Chicken Jerky produced from whole, restaurant-quality chicken breasts containing NO Additives and NO Preservatives. Our 3 Pomeranians (our babies!) taste test every batch for quality.

When we’re not making Jerky, we spend our time at events handing out fliers on the FDA warning about Chinese treats, speaking to anyone who will listen about the dangers, and advocating for a ban on all Chinese chicken treats.
