FDA Recalls True Max Sexual Energy and Energy Max Capsules

Ingredients May Dangerously Interact with Nitroglycerin and Other Meds

You may remember the scene in the movie Something's Gotta Give, when Harry Sanborn, played by Jack Nicholson, tells the emergency room medical officials that he takes Viagra. In the movie, Harry is experiencing chest pains and must reveal his Viagra secret before receiving nitroglycerin as a possible treatment.

In a similar real-life consumer alert, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has requested a recall of two products that contain ingredients that may potentially interact with some prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin and other nitrates. The two products being recalled are sold under the trade names "True Man Sexual Energy Nutrient Capsules" and "Energy Max Energy Supplement Men's Formula Capsules." According to the FDA press release, the FDA has not approved these two products and there is no information on their safety or effectiveness.

The FDA warns that these products are illegal drugs containing ingredients that can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. In FDA laboratory research, these two dietary supplements used to enhance erectile function, showed that they contain potentially harmful undeclared ingredients. The manufacturer, America True Man Health, Inc., of West Covina, California, received a notice by the FDA to recall the products. The products are sometimes advertised as all natural alternatives to approved erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs.

According to the FDA chemical tests, the Energy Max capsules contain thione, which is related to sildenafil, similar to the active ingredient in Viagra. True Man contains the same ingredient or a related ingredient to vardenafil that is found in Levitra. The FDA has not approved thione and analogs of vardenafil in their FDA-approved drug products. These erectile dysfuntion analog ingredients may have serious side effects when taken with prescription medications used for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease.

True Man and Energy Max capsules are sold in blister pack cartons and are frequently advertised in newspapers, retail stores, and on the Internet. The FDA warned consumers as far back as May 10, 2007, not to use these products. FDA officials issued the November recall after America True Man Health, Inc. failed to notify its consignees of the potentially harmful ingredients in these products.

The FDA advises consumers who are taking True Man Sexual Energy Nutrient Capsules or Energy Max Energy Supplement Men's Formula Capsules to stop taking them immediately. Consumers should seek medical attention if they have experienced any side effects from using these products. Consumers should also contact their health care provider if they have taken these products while also taking medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease.
