FDA Warns Meridia Weight Loss Drug May Cause Heart Attacks, Strokes and Other Serious Health Issues

Those who are using the prescription drug Meridia to assist with weight loss should be aware of possible health risks. Meridia is made by a manufacturer based in North Carolina.

The FDA has been prompted by at least one group to remove Meridia from the market because of possible health issues in some patients. Anyone who has been taking this prescription medication to assist with weight loss should consult with their physician. Be aware that this product is no longer sold in Europe because of recent health warnings.

The FDA has reported that studies indicate Meridia could be contraindicated in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease. Patients with a history of stroke, congestive heart failure, uncontrolled hypertension, or peripheral arterial disease should not be using this medication.

Reports also show that patients who have not lost 5% of their weight during their first 12 to 26 weeks of using Meridia should stop using the product. The drug is to be used in combination with a diet that would encourage weight loss.

Physicians that prescribe weigh loss products of any kind for their patients are aware of any warnings. Patients may need medical tests to be assured they are healthy enough to use any prescription diet product, as these often have side effects.

It has been claimed that as many as 84 people died while taking Meridia. The manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories, disagrees with the FDAs warning about Meridia, and feels this is a safe drug when used correctly.
