Fear of Economic Collapse Fuels Survivalist Trend
Americans Stockpile Food, Durable Goods, Weapons and Ammunition in Face of Coming Anarchy
Most stores have imposed limits on how many boxes of the most popular ammunition each customer can purchase to discourage the frequent arguments that break out when the first customer in line tries to buy the entire shipment as soon as it hits the shelves.
Army surplus and camping supply stores are reporting increased sales of dehydrated foodstuffs, MREs (meals ready to eat), camp stoves, portable generators, and various other items that only primitive camping enthusiasts were interested in over previous years. The customer base for these items has expanded from country folk and adventurers to average urbanites who sit in crowded cubicles punching away at keyboards and IP phones during the work week.
There hasn't been an increase of visitors to state parks and lakes.
These folks are preparing for the Apocolypse.
While the federal government drains the treasury in what appears to be a desperate and poorly planned attempt to stop the economic hemoraging, average citizens experiencing job loss either personally or by contact with family and friends, are recognizing an ever-increasing downward spiral.
Instinct tells us that if the trend is not reversed, many folks are going to become desperate as they and their children slowly suffer the loss of durable goods, clothing, and food. As those needs become more intense, the willingness to do the unthinkable will increase. That means people will be more willing to commit violence and theivery.
Wise people who still have jobs and money to spend are investing in the tools and supplies of survival instead of Wall Street.
Survivalist sites on the internet are experiencing large spikes in traffic. Even DIY and advice column sites likeadvicefromgrandpa.com are getting numerous inquiries from folks largly interested in weapons and military survival gear.
Throughout the last century there have been many prophets of doom. Most of them came and went while society carried on, never experiencing the massive breakdown in law and order that had been predicted. Today, the doomsday prophets are around in about the same numbers, but the difference is that the populace is responding to the current news and environment with decisive action...preparing for the worst.
It has often been said that animals have a sixth sense which tells them to flee inland right before a tidal wave, or to flee from faultline areas hours and even days before an earthquake strikes.
Could it be that the mass human subconscious in America has an inkling that a major societal collapse is looming in the weeks or months ahead?
Or is it just common sense to start getting prepared for the worst when a young, inexperienced president who is the product of a thugish Chicago political machine and a corrupt group of greedy leftists gain total power over two-thirds of the federal government and spends more money in the first hundred days of the administration than all other previous administrations COMBINED?
Trends are effects from causes. They don't happen randomly or by coincidence.

Post a CommentYou are right. I have a 380 and Walmart never has any ammo for it for sale. I planted a large garden this year just to be prepared and have made a lot of other plans just in case we find the government is moving us into third world country status. If it doesn't happen then, good, but I was a boy scout and was taught to "Be Prepared".
I have also wondered about the sudden interest in survialist stuff going on or it just being mass paranoia? I have also increased my garden and ammo supply.
I understand, Tim. With food prices getting higher every day and more folks losing their jobs or taking pay cuts, homesteading is making more and more sense by the second; I, for one, have expanded my summer garden from a dozen 5-gal buckets to tillin' up half my backyard (and some of the front)and turning my 1/4 acre into a small farm! Wake up, people! The future belongs to the truly self-reliant, and it's not that hard if you don't mind a little hard work and sacrifice!
This is thought provoking, though I have to say I have not seen such behavior here in recession resistant Washington, DC. It is hard to understand how people can believe such things.
