Fear of Flying is Caused by Many Things, Find What You Fear the Most and Overcome It

Many people hate the idea of flying in an airplane of any kind. This fear can be caused by many things. Some are just simply nervous while others go into panic attacks and start to have nervous breakdowns while onboard a plane. You may have seen someone sitting near you on a plane that looked pale white and extremely afraid because of flying. This article will examine what possibly creates the fear of flying and how to overcome these fears.

The first thing to do when you are trying to get over a fear of flying is to find out exactly what scares you the most about it.

The first fear that seems most obvious is a fear of heights. If a person is afraid of heights, they are most likely not going to feel comfortable flying 30,000 feet over the earth. A fear of heights is very hard to overcome. A person has to be very strong mentally and focus on the fact that they can be comfortable and safe at large heights. Do not sit near the window if possible when you are in flight as this will cause you to look out and become even more afraid.

Though probably not as common as other reasons to fear flying, terrorism could be in the back of a persons mind and make them wary of flying. After 9/11, just about everyone has felt a little less secure on airlines. What you have to realize is that terrorist attacks are extremely uncommon and the chances of one happening are almost zero.

Another aspect that may effect people and cause fear of flying is the fact that the person in fear is not in control of the situation at all. Being in charge of a situation and being able to help themselves makes most people feel better about a situation that may be nerve-racking for them. When someone is on a plane and very high in the air, they have absolutely not control over their fate. This realization could really affect someone and cause quite a large amount of fear of the situation.

The first key in knowing how to fight fear of flying is the statistics that have to do with crash rates. Flying in an airplane is actually one of the safest available ways to travel. Any person that drives a vehicle is almost 30 times more likely to get in an accident then someone who is flying on an airplane. Though mishaps do happen and planes crash, such occurances are extremely uncommon.

The second key to overcoming a fear of flying is to be very educated and know exactly how the plane operates and what safety precautions are taken to ensure your safety. Knowing these things will make you feel much better about your flight.

If you want some help in getting over a fear of flying there are also a few resources for you. Many books and even courses are available for those who are wary of the air. These resources will help you greatly. Some airlines even provide materials to help passengers with fear before a flight.

Along with these resources, try to have a friend that is not afraid of flying accompany you on your flight. This obviously may not be possible due to a specific situation, but having someone with you that can tell you everything will be O.K. will help. People like to hear encouragement from others and to reassured of things they fear.

There are many reasons that people fear flying, and all are legitimate. What a person in fear of flying has to realize is that there are ways to help minimize and hopefully eliminate their fear and have a peaceful flight. Focus on getting over the fear and find what works for you.
