Fear of Success

When Getting Ahead is Difficult

FGual
Why is it that so many people try to get ahead, or so it seems, and never do? They try repeatedly, going from job to job and never quite making it. Something always goes wrong. What often seems like fear of failure is actually fear of success. Never settling on any career path, they dabble in this and that.Their fear of commitment sets in when things get serious, with little self-improvement. Being tied down to anything scares them, because then they will have to prove themselves. They will be accountable, and their background anonymity will disappear. It will be time to face the music, the camera, the world, whatever.

Continually claiming they're sick and tired of their boring jobs, and the endless frustration of being broke. But they never plan an intelligent, orderly way out of this shadowland. Or they may be the perpetual student, reading through many self-help books, or still going to college, the same one they have been attending for decades. While it's true that some careers, like medicine, require many years of study, most don't. Always getting ready, they accomplish little in their life. What's really driving them is a deeply ingrained insecurity that prevents them from overcoming procrastination..

Their early experiences convinced them that they not good enough, or deserving enough, of a better life where their repressed talents could propel them into the middle class with just some self-esteem help. Afraid to let go of the parental authority they awarded their employer, they will endure abusive, berating bosses. This causes unhealthy stress that could cripple them. Still, is spite of glaring clues that they are in the wrong job or career, they soldier on. Often projecting an image of martyrdom, so others will feel sorry for them. The thought of overcoming anxiety and living on their own, without an umbilical cord, is frightening. It's the sad way many spend their life.
