First you have to be willing to put aside some time in your life for adult education. If you have no free time now, you will need to think about ways that you can cut some of your time commitments. For example, you could stop doing so much work with the PTO, or you could ask your spouse to take over cooking one night a week. Delegate if you need to but find out if you can cut hours from your schedule to make time for school.
If the thought of adult education scares you, then decide why and see if you can address that fear. Perhaps you are afraid that you will not be able to handle the exams or the writing load. There are tutorials you can purchase. If funding has you worried, then look into your financial aid options.
Scheduling is tough for any working adult who is considering going back to school. Online education is an area that might work for you. While online education was once considered New Age and a little unrefined, many land-based universities now offer online programs. An online education can be just as challenging as any other program, but you can make the commute to your living room computer much more easily than you can commute to a campus. You can work on your own schedule, which will give you flexibility.
Finally you need to be willing to put aside time for yourself. Many adults give to their partners, children, and communities before they take any time for themselves. If you are going to be one of the hundreds of thousands of people attending college in the next tyear, then you should begin to put yourself first.
Adult education is a growing part of the post-secondary education world. More working adults than ever are trying to juggle the demands of college, career, and family at the same time. By addressing your fears, you can conquer this balancing act as well.
