In the past, video game system titans like Playstation and Nintendo would replace an old system with something entirely new. The SNES gave way to the Nintendo 64 just as the Playstation was replaced by the Playstation 2 and eventually the Playstation 3. As technology continues to progress faster and faster, however, companies are finding that by simply updating their machines they can stay ahead of the game without having to do a complete overhaul. The result? The multiple versions of the Xbox 360 by Microsoft.

Past Versions

The Xbox 360 has had a long history of updated versions. Upon its release, even, there were two different versions with different sized hardrives in order to give the consumer some choice about what price they wanted to pay for their video game console. The original Xbox 360s were replaced by "Elite" and "Arcade" versions. Now, these versions have been discontinued and are being replaced by the slimmer and more powerful Xbox 360 S

Xbox 360 S

Announced on June 14th during Microsoft's press briefing prior to E3 2010, this brand new Xbox came as a surprise only to some. Only about a month earlier, new designs for the Xbox 360 S had been leaked on the internet, so this news was expected to occur sooner or later.

The new Xbox 360 S is smaller and quieter than all previous Xboxes. The major change is a new CPU chip based using 45nm fabrication processes. This means a powerful new system that is small at the same time. The internal architecture has also been redesigned to make it run more efficiently and cooler. It includes a 250 GB hard drive, 5 USB ports (that is two more than ever before), and a new port for the Kinect--the new Xbox camera designed for controllerless gaming.

This model finally has good Wi-Fi capability, unlike previous versions. The memory card slots in the controllers have been replaced by USB slots and the new eject buttons are touch sensitive instead of being physical buttons. The system has the words "Xbox 360 S" on the back, but Microsoft chooses to just call it the "new Xbox 360."

The new design is sleek and cool, the minor changes are smart and nice, the new processing ability is sure to impressive and wowing. There is a lot to love about this new upgrade. The best thing is this new model is set to be released immediately in US stores. This new model will cost $299.99. Remaining stock of older models will also see a quick drop in price, so you may want to take this opportunity to get a deal on the older versions.
