February 2007 Boxing Schedule

It's the start of the second month, Here's a recap of last month's action:

Anthony Hanshaw - Jean Paul Mendy: DRAW

Unfortunately we didn't get that preeminent victor out of this matchup. Hanshaw received a nasty cut on his head due to an accidental head butt. Despite a draw, it wasn't too bad of a matchup. Great spirit by both fighters and hopefully we'll see a rematch really soon.

James Toney - Samuel Peter: Peter UD12 Toney

What an impressive victory for Samuel Peter "The Nigerian Nightmare." Last September's victory was a bit shaky, but he made up for it on January 6, 2007. Peter came in much faster, stronger and had way more stamina than his last outing. From the first round on, it was Peter all day. He blasted Toney with power shots, even dropping him in the second round. Hopefully we'll get to see Peter take on Maskaev soon.

Ricky Hatton - Juan Urango: Hatton UD12 Urango

Hatton looked great against the stronger Urango. Many of us expected a classic bullfight but as Ricky Hatton stated, "It's not always good to fight fire with fire." Hatton out boxed Urango the entire fight, winning virtually every round. He awaits a matchup later this year (possibly June) with Jose Luis Castillo.

Jose Luis Castillo - Herman Ngoudjo: Castillo UD12 Ngoudjo.

It was a close fight that many thought Ngoudjo deserved to win. Nevertheless, the more recognized Castillo was awarded the fight and will now face Hatton possibly in the early part of the summer.

On to February...

February 2007

3rd

Tomasz Adamek vs. Chad Dawson
WBC Light Heavyweight title (175lb)
Showtime

Great matchup at Light heavyweight; both fighters are undefeated and will lay it all on the line. Adamek (31-0 21KOs) is returning to the ring after his all-out war with Paul Briggs last October. Dawson made an impression after defeating veteran Eric Harding; coming off the canvas in round one to win a gutsy 12-rounder.

Jesus Chavez vs. Julio Diaz
IBF Lightweight Title (135lb)

Since his fatal war with Leavander Johnson in 2005, Chavez (43-3 30KOs) has been inactive and is looking to return to the ring. Julio Diaz (33-3 24KOs) however, has been on a three-fight win streak since his loss to Castillo. With the IBF lightweight title on the line, this has slobber knocker written all over it.

Cory Spinks vs. Rodney Jones
IBF Junior-Middleweight title (154lb)

Spinks is back on the scene at (35-3 11KOs). Recently, he captured the IBF 154lb title from Roman Karmazin and is set to take on Mandatory opponent Rodney Jones (37-3-1 22KOs). Big things will be down the road for Spinks if he can get pass Jones. But this assignment can be tough; Rodney Jones hasn't lost a match in seven years. He's earned his title shot and looks to pull off an upset victory against Spinks if possible.

*Former Cruiserweight champion Wayne Braithwaite (21-2 17KOs) returns against Derrick Brown on this card also!

10th

"Sugar" Shane Mosley vs. Luis Collazo
Welterweight (147lbs)

Mosley (43-4 37KOs) is taking on a tough assignment in Luis Collazo. Collazo (27-2 13KOs) is an extremely skilled southpaw who gave Ricky Hatton all he could handle last May. This is a dangerous matchup; Shane Mosley has more to lose than to gain and Collazo has more to gain than to lose. If Collazo can pull off the upset he will establish himself as one of the top welterweights in the world.

Vivian Harris vs. Juan Lazcano

Harris is looking to launch his name in the prominent status of pound 4 pound fighters today. He should get it, if he can exterminate Lazcano (37-3-1 27KOs). It'll be a night of welterweights. It's possible that every fighter from 140-154lbs will be tuned in to follow this station. Harris must be no less than explosive to get that extra boost he's been pushing for.

17th

Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi vs. Edner "Cherry Bomb" Cherry

Since his June 2006 loss to Miguel Cotto, Paulie has been idle; awaiting the date of his return to the ring. Malignaggi is (21-1 5KOs), extremely talented won't go out easy. Cherry (21-4-2 10KOs) has gone 2-1 in his last three fights and is on the verge of catapulting himself to stardom if he can get past Malignaggi.

Other stars featured on this HBO card include:

*Sechew Powell (20-1 12KOs) vs. Ishe Smith (18-1 8KOs)
*Andre Berto (16-0 14KOs) vs. Ben Tackie (29-6-1 17KOs)

Be sure to tune in as March promises to bring more excitement back to the sport.
