February is Adopt a Rabbit Month!: 5 Reasons Rabbits Make Excellent Pets

Lauren Romano
February is Adopt a Rabbit month, so it's a great opportunity to learn why they make wonderful pets. Some may think rabbits are adorable and just sit there not doing much, but not many realize that they are quite loving and playful. Sure they're cute, but there are several other reasons why they would fit well into your home and family.

They Can Use a Litter Box

Although rabbits typically won't make a big mess anyway, the less droppings you have to pick up from around the cage the better it is. They usually choose one or more corners to go in so once you know which one it is, place a small litter box in that corner and fill it with pelleted paper which is absorbent and easy to clean up. Change the litter box once a day.

They're Social Animals

Rabbits typically love social interaction and will cuddle up to people and sit on their laps although they often don't like being held. They also love spending time with other rabbits, sleep next to them and groom them. They are affectionate toward other animals, including dogs, and may have no problem interacting with them.

They Take Up Little Space

Although rabbit cages are large, they actually work well even in small spaces. You can get a collapsible play pen that they can frolic in when you take them out of the cage for exercise and socialization. The pen can take up some floor space, but since it folds up it can be hidden easily in a closet or under furniture. It's best to keep bunnies inside, not only because it's safer and more comfortable for them, but also so they can have as much socialization as possible. According to the Indiana House Rabbit Society, indoor bunnies that have proper love and care live about 7-10 years on average compared to an average of two years for a rabbit that lives outdoors in a hutch.

Rabbits Aren't Loud

Rabbits make tiny grunts or squeaks, but not much noise other than that. This can make them ideal for apartments and even rooms within a home so no one can hear them.

You Can Leave Them Alone

Rabbits can stay in a cage all day and still be happy as long as you let them out when you get home every day so they get plenty of exercise. They sleep throughout the day so they'll be too busy sleeping comfortably to worry about scampering about. They are most active in the early morning hours and in the evening.

If that wasn't enough reasons to convince you why rabbits are a good idea, check out this big dose of cuteness in the form of a video of two bunnies.
