February's Superstorm 2010 and Tomato Plants

The Blizzard of February, 2010 was a whopper. Many schools are closed and cars are snowed-in. Power is still off in some areas. Roof damage reports are coming in and roads are slick. Road cleaning crews are out with convoys of snow plows lining up and maneuvering the roads into open-routes of transportation. On top of this, weather stations are talking about the possiblity of five to eight more inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Folks are doing their best to dig-out. Thankful!

Seeing the mounds and drifts of snow outside, it could be easy to feel discouraged and beaten down by the constant ravages of this winter, especially here in southcentral Pennsylvania. But be encouraged, spring is near. Giving thanks and being grateful will lift the spirit and let the sunshine through, no matter how deep the snow or cloudy the sky! Spirit-lifting words of encouragement can fortify and help to make the snow-shovel lighter (Associated Content, Augustlace's Thankful Thanksgiving or Wendy Dawn's Meaningful Thanksgiving). An attitude of grattitude is a powerful beginning and an instant energy boost!

Snowed-in with the kids!

Take time to take some time out. Plan some fun indoor activities with the kids. With over 20 inches of snow piled up outside, and temperatures well below the twenties in some places, check out some kids fun on Associated Content (Zoe Tegan).

Snow accumulation!

More than 26 inches of snow fell here in the woods and shoveling-out is a step by step, minute by minute adventure. It took 30 minutes to shovel through the woods and trees to reach the chicken coop. A path to the main road will take a couple of hours. This is a heavy wet snow. A larger driveway could mean moving a couple of tons of snow. Be safe, and don't try to do it in a day. Overdoing it today might show up in a few days in the form of some aching muscles or even worse. Be safe. Easy does it!

Spring is just around the corner!

Though it looks and feels like a forever-winter, many garden centers will soon be blooming with the hundreds of cheerful, painted faces of pansies - with tomato plants soon to follow. Between those periods of shoveling snow, the seed catalogues could make the rest of this winter a fly-by. Make lists of varieties that do well in your area and plan your plant-buying expedition. You'll be ahead of the game!
