FED-ED Benefits Cut Off as Congress Struggles to Pass Unemployment Benefits Extension Bill

Ninety-niners Cut Off Long Before the Finish Line

S Gardner
The Senate failed to pass the unemployment benefits extension on Wednesday and is reportedly still having difficulty garnering the necessary 60 votes even for a scaled back bill as responsible Senators still seek to prevent additional deficit spending and are seeking a bill in which benefits are paid for. This is terrifying news for the millions of unemployed Americans who stand to run out of benefits at the end of their current tier as they will be unable to apply for the next.

Little reported, however, is the fact that the millons who have suffered the longest from this horrible job market and are already on the final Fed-Ed extension, will receive their LAST UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS CHECK THIS WEEK. According to EDD websites nationwide, all Fed-Ed benefits are suspended after the June 12 claim period. Regardless of how many more weeks these Fed-Ed recipients are slated to receive, no matter how much remains in their account to be provided, these people are out of benefits NOW. The California EDD website states as follows:

"With no further congressional action, the last payable week for FED-ED benefits is the week ending June 12, 2010. That's the case for all FED-ED claimants no matter how far into a FED-ED extension they are or what their balance may be on this extension. Notices being sent to these claimants include information about local resources and services that may be of further assistance. Such resources include One-Stop Career Centers for job search and training assistance, county welfare offices for CalWORKS and other programs to assist families in need, and the WeConnect Web site created by First Lady of California Maria Shriver to connect families with programs and services designed to help them get ahead."

While unemployment benefits recipients on all the other tiers will receive the remaining balance of their tier, Fed-Ed recipients will not. No advanced warning was provided but EDD offices are now gearing up to send "regret to inform you" letters later this week.

Federal funding for unemployment benefits ran dry on May 30. Without an unemployment benefits extension attracting a minimum of 60 votes in the Senate (and then being approved again in the House), Fed Ed recipients are out of luck as of right now.

Tell Congress to pass Sen. John Thune's Bill to extend unemployment benefits and to pay for it, so as not to further add to the nation's deficit, crippling the economy and further employment prospects for the future.

This is stupid ! I got all my extensions but cant get Fed Ed because there wasnt enough eranings in my last base period ! I worked 17 of the 20 weeks needed to get Fed Ed evidently. I was laid off after 17 weeks due to this reccession. I was out of work prior to that job due also to this reccession ! I worked always before that making 6 figures and paying into UE and taxes ! Pass a freakin UE extenstion that covers everyone without stupid restrictions that are making us lose everything because there are no jobs when your 48 and above ! Give us time to figure out what to do now !

You are so right Bo. I was one of the people Mary Anne was talking crap to. I am a young educated individual. I earned a Bachelor Degree and Graduated at the top of my class. So, I automatically thought I was a shoe in for a good career. Boy, I was wrong! After sending out hundreds of resumes and never receiving a reply, than getting cut off my unemployment with no warning. I now have to work for pennies. I just got a job offer for 12 dollars an hour but I first have to go through this whole training process before its official. If I get this job it will barely pay my monthly college tuition and put gas in my car . . . hopefully! This is not mentioning all the other stuff I need . . . like food! But I’m still keeping high hopes and maybe one day I'll get that job offer I've been wishing for, where I can eat, shower, and clothe myself with no worries. Isn’t this the reason why people go to college . . . to get a good job, not to get so far in debt where you can’t even afford groce

Mary Anne is just the type of lucky idiot that still has a job that I was referring to on my post before this one. It's called " DUMB LUCK " when there are college educated people out of work, can't find a job, and some low life DINGBAT was lucky to still have a job and talks crap. She sounds dumb as a doorknob, and probably so ugly it will F-up your vision

Who ever thinks we like being unemployed, want to be unemployed, or we're making a killing being unemployed is an idiot. We aren't bums, this is mainstream America. This is the worst economy since the great depression, and through no fault of our own, we were laid off. I remember times when you could quit one job and have another within and day or two, but this is unbelievable. Its so bad that someone with college degrees can't even find a 10 dollar an hour job, let alone competing with thousands for that one job. If I wasn't unemployed to see it for myself I'd never believe it. So its easy for a lucky goofball, still working, to talk crap as though they're better. You don't have a clue.

i still had 3000 remaining on my account that means theres gonna be a hold on that till they pass it?

  • Jesse6/24/2010

Mary Anne, are you high? Do you not know what is going on around you? Some of us with masters degrees, can even get a 10.00 an hour job, and believe me it is a recession EVERYWHERE, so moving was an option until we found out it is worse in other areas. I hope you find out what unemployment is really like soon!

"we connect" by Maria Shriver is a joke!! It is the welfare system, and we all know what road we are going down Ms. Shriver, you act like this is going to save our asses! OMG! It is food stamps, food pantry, and wic, PLLEEUUZZZ! Give us a break, you even included the EIC credit for taxes, like we don't know how to fill that out??!! We are unemployed, not dumbasses. Everyone go to change.org to sign the Tier V extension, at least that way we are doing something to help, instead of waiting, and watching for the Republicans to pull out their heads...

I am sorry I have worked for a very long time and have paid into unemployment and now my 28 weeks are just about up. I am scared to death on how I am going to survive just like the majority of you. I have never had such a hard time getting a job yet alone an interview the economy is still bad. What is fair for one ahould be fair to all who have been able to collect the 4 tiers that were available. All I can say to Everybody write the president and voice your concerns now! www.whitehouse.com

Wow "Mary Anne" spoken like a true person who has a job, lucky you. Thanks for the compassion. I don't know about anyone else, but I have taxes taken out of my unemployment and I own a home which I pay property tax on. The unemployment checks I have received has helped me keep that home, to continue to pay property tax on. So, if I can remember right, I have worked for the last 14 years paying into unemplyment, and I am tahnkful beyond belief it is there for me now. I hope you are never in a position where you have to claim on it yourself, because you will end up choking on your own words!:)
