Feeding Freshwater Fish

Shannon Frye
When it comes to feeding freshwater fish, you will have to feed them in moderation. You will want to feed the fish a small amount of fish food each time that you feed the fish. You will need to feed your fish at least twice or three times a day. If you feed the fish a large amount at one time most of the food will sit at the bottom of the tank which will lead to water quality problems. This food will then start to decay which will cause your water levels to go up.

You do not want to feed your fish right when you turn on your light in your fish tank. The fish will go into shock as soon as you turn the light on. They will not eat right away. You will want to wait at least 10 or 15 minutes when you feed your fish in the morning. You will also want to feed your fish at night right before you go to bed. Some fish will only eat at night such as catfish and certain types of bottom feeders.

You will want to feed your fish a variety of different fish foods. This will greatly help to clear out their digestive tracks. If you feed your fish the same food all of the time, the fish will probably get constipated and stressed out. You will want to try feeding your fish different types of fish flakes and different types of frozen foods such as brine shrimp. You can purchase freshwater variety packs at the pet store in the freezer section

If you have any type of catfish or bottom feeders you will want to purchase bottom feeder pellet food which will sink. You can purchase many different types of bottom feeder food from your local pet store. Bottom feeder fish will usually not eat fish flakes. One common type of fish is the algae eater, which will eat algae and it will also eat a variety of different types of pellet foods made for bottom feeders.

You will want to make sure that you feed the fish food which will sink. If the fish takes in too much air, the swim bladder will become effected and the fish will swim upside down in the fish tank. Make sure that your fish aren't sucking the fish flakes off of the top of the water. Goldfish are one type of fish which is known for getting swim bladder problems.
