Things You'll Need
~~ Iams large chunk food (dry or canned)
~~ 1-cup scoop
~~ Dog bowl
Dry Food
Step 1
Add 2 1/2 cups of large-chunk dog food to your dog's bowl if he is around 50 lbs. Large dogs eat large portions of dry food, and depending on the size of the dog the amount of Iams food given varies as well. Essentially, you want to give your dog approximately 1 full cup of food per every 25 lbs it weighs. This is recommended by Iams. However, the University of Missouri recommends that lactating or pregnant dogs, working dogs and dogs that get a lot of exercise be given more.
Step 2
Increase the amount to 3 cups if your dog weighs as much as 120 lbs. Again, the bigger the dog, the more food he eats at a time, but it is absolutely necessary to use common sense in deciding on how much to feed your dog. Iams and other dog food manufacturers offer feeding guidelines as general guidelines only. Every dog is different. If your dog is as much as 120 lbs due to being overweight, a lesser amount should be given to assure the health of your pet.
Step 3
Feed this amount to your dog once a day. If your dog is on a specific eating schedule, recommended by your veterinarian, split the amount up into equal amounts to serve throughout your dog's feeding times. For example, 4 cups of Iams dog food, 3 times a day gives your dog a little over a cup of food per serving. The University of Missouri and Clemson University stress the importance of a regular feeding schedule for dogs. For one thing, large breed dogs that adhere to feeding schedules are less likely to develop bloat, and for another it is easier to housebreak a dog who eats on a scheduled routine. Canned Food
Step 1
Pull the tab on the can of Iam's canned dog food. If it requires a can opener, use one to open it instead. Large chunk canned food comes in a wide array of flavors such as chicken and vegetables and lamb and beef liver. These cans come in sizes of 8 to 16 oz.
Step 2
Pour 8 oz. of the Iams canned dog food into the dog's bowl. If your dog weighs more than 50 lbs. it will need more. Add an additional 8 oz. for every 25 lbs. your dog weighs. According to Iams' website, a dog as large as 120 lbs. will eat as many as three and 1/4 8-oz. cans a day.
Step 3
Separate the amounts as needed if your dog adheres to a feeding schedule. Check with your veterinarian to assure your dog will benefit from eating Iams formulated dog foods or if another feeding choice is adequate.
Tips
~~ Follow guidelines on the back of your Iam's dog food back for optimized instructions on feeing your large-breed dog, but check with your veterinarian if your dog requires additional care or feeding habits.
~~ Allow your dog time to acclimate if you are switching him from a different brand of food. It is normal for a dog's stomach to become upset after changing foods. Iam's rich, high-quality formula of minerals, vitamins and other essentials may take a few days to adjust to.
~~ Try mixing a couple of tablespoons of the wet large chunk dog food with dry to combine the textures for your dog's enjoyment.
