Feeling Satisified

Jen Levow
As our ship pulled into the cliffs of Santorini, Greece, my mind was at peace for the first time in my life. The white walls that surrounded the island along with the blue waves that sparkle along the shore were therapy alone. So why the heck am I living in the suburbs in New Jersey? I keep asking my husband if he wants to give up his 401K job and rent mopeds to the tourists and he continually gives me a smirk with a nod. Does he not know that I would give up everything to be there this very minute? I can waitress as the children frolic and collect seashells on the red and black sand beaches.

Although this is my fantasy, why can't it be my reality? Everyone constantly reminds themselves that life is too short and we should live it the way we see fit, but then we go and live the accepted American dream. I am tired of following the rules of acceptance. Materialistic items such as the coaches that took us five hours to agree upon mean absolutely nothing to me. I say throw them to the curb and sell the rest. Pack your bags and start living. Why can't your Mommy and me be on the beach? My afternoon nap is meant to be outside in the sun with a sparkling water at my side. Who needs a supermarket when you have fresh tomatoes at the local store where the owner knows you by your name?

Wouldn't life be grand if it was this simple? Wait a minute; life is what we make of it. We chose that office job and the house in the suburbs. We thought Wegman's was the coolest supermarket when we got our new zip code. Who could ask for more, we are only an hour from Philly and an hour to Manhattan. Oh my god, I think I am going to throw up. How did I end up living someone else's life? There, I said it aloud, I am not satisfied.

Maybe Greece is not my answer, because it does not fill my husband's dream, but Jersey has beaches. Is it a small town I am searching for where everyone cooks for the holiday party, or do I just want to be on a vacation 24/7? People of all ages search for these answers and only the wisest of mankind achieves their dreams. Please give him my phone number if you run into him.
