Because we used to have a light fixture in our dining room that took the chandelier bulbs, I was pretty sure what we needed to buy. My husband thought we needed a chandelier bulb with a larger base, but I was correct. However, until we shopped for these style of bulbs at Lowe's and Home Depot, I did not know that they were available in the compact fluorescent style, energy saving light bulbs.
We purchased a package of two Feit Ecobulb Energy Saving Candelabra Style Light bulbs (CFL's) from Home Depot for $10.96. Granted, these bulbs are much more expensive than regular incandescent bulbs, but they save a ton of energy! One bulb uses only 13 watts of energy, but actually replaces a 60 watt bulb! They have a light output of 800 lumens, and have a life time burn of 8,000 hours! What a great idea to place these in hard to reach areas, you won't have to worry about changing them for a very long time. The packaging states that based on normal household use of 3 hours per day, this bulb lasts up to 7 years.
For comparison purposes, I visited the General Electric site and looked at their standard, incandescent GE Crystal Clear B10 Chandelier light bulbs, and they only have a burn time of 1500 hours, so there is a very big difference between the energy saving bulbs and standard bulbs. (GE also makes the CFL energy saving bulbs).
Our Feit Ecobulb Energy Saving Candelabra Style Light bulbs are small, they measure only 4 1/4 inches in length, and are a "soft white" bulb. The package states that using these will save the home owner $90 per year in energy costs. Multiply that by all of the bulbs you have in your home, and clearly it is a substantial savings, and it is helping the environment in the process. The only thing you need to be aware of is that these CFL bulbs do contain mercury, and they need to be managed in accordance with disposal laws, since mercury is considered a toxic substance.
I am thrilled that we found chandelier style light bulbs that are energy efficient. The spiral shape of the bulb is not very noticeable through the glass globe of my bathroom light fixture, and they give off plenty of light while saving me money and helping the earth. They are a win-win product!
