Fembot: Creating the Perfect Woman

Erin Thursby
Sci-Fi, aside, it seems inevitable that someone out there was working on creating the perfect woman. Or at least one that can clean the house and fix drinks. Le Trung of Toranto did just that by inventing a robot that looks remarkably human.

He spent just $21,000 on her creation. That might sound like a lot, but it's actually a fairly cheap amount for this kind of R&D.

He reportedly started the project as a caretaker and claims she's not a sex toy. But with a name like Aiko (which means love-child), the ability to feel and her life-like status, I couldn't help but think of Lars and the Real Girl.

Some of the things he's programmed her to do are incredible. For instance, she's programmed to "feel" pressure and pain. That sort of fine definition is exactly what robots doing fine work need. Our senses are not overrated. They're what give us our information about the world.

From what I've seen her do on video, I'm not sure how advanced she really is. He can program a response to a specific variable, true, but can she learn?

In the videos she identifies a sandwich-but would Aiko know a sub sandwich when she sees one or does she just respond to a peanut butter and jelly?

It's hard to know how much of this is flim flammery. The fact that she can read a newspaper wouldn't be news but for the fact that she looks human. We already have programs that can scan text and read it aloud-but when she does it seems to be a miracle. Logistically, of course, the fact that she can recognize different sized print and handwritten equations (yes, she does math too) is a testament to the programmer's skill and perseverance.

A robot like this is possible right now and has been possible. It's just a matter of putting together robot tech from different industries. I found nothing about Aiko so far that was a total innovation. The simple fact that her creator put her together by himself without sponsorship makes her a wonder.

She was developed for housework and to take care of the infirm, but interest in her as an advanced "perfect" girl has caused her creator to answer questions about whether or not she can orgasm. Or at least fake it. He says with some adjustments that it is possible.

But she's a good girl. In fact, she's programmed to slap anyone who touches her breast.

Now that he has the robot mostly developed, he's looking for cash and sponsorship.

Here's the list of what she can do:

--recognize faces

--give directions

--feel pain

--read aloud

--do equations

The idea of a fem-bot thoroughly scares the bejesus out of me. One day they're giving you directions, the next day they are holding you hostage and demanding the gasoline from your car. Nice article.

How bizarre! This guy has way too much time on his hands! But you're right about the price -- $21,000 does sound cheap. Maybe she's just his 'cheap woman." :)

Yes, but can she also cleans the windows for me? That's the question, lol. Excellent article.:)
