Why Oprah Being Off Television May Be Good for Women All Over America

Oprah recently announced that she will be airing her last season next year. She shed a few tears as she made this announcement, and I also got teary eyed as she announced it. But this departure may be a good thing. I mean, Oprah has a very informative show, that seems to be even better this season, but Oprah is also the furthest thing from a modern day feminist. (I now call it a femi-nazi if you haven't noticed).

Oprah's main audience is women who are middle aged and older. They are probably old and set in their ways, and are least likely to develop a new outlook on things. Oprah panders to that audience. Now that she's leaving daytime t.v., maybe those women will have the opportunity to live outside the "Oprah world" and get to know the real world. What do I mean by the real world? I mean the modern world. The world where women are no longer getting married as early as they used to be, the world where women are working more, earning more, and are much more sexually comfortable than they were back in the old days.

Oprah's show encouraged women to change spiritually-to get a new life and make a new start. But I think that the new start that American women need as a whole has nothing to do with reading certain books or traveling, and all those other "live life on your own terms" things Oprah encourages. Women of American need to turn back the old fashioned outlook on life that we've been taught ever since the establishment of our country. Let's take a look back....

There was a point in this country when we were not allowed to work. Not because we weren't able, but because old time Christians believed that men are supposed to work, and women were supposed to have babies. This is thought to be the curse that God put on Adam and Eve. This is what our founding fathers believed, and it is also what a lot of people today still believe.

(*By the way, God never told Eve she couldn't work.)

We were also not allowed to be in the military. This was because men who were in the military had children with their wives, and someone needed to be home with the kids if the men went off to war. This was also because we were probably not viewed as trainable or skillful in physical activity such as running and shooting.

And of course we weren't allowed to vote. This is simply because we were not viewed as mentally able to make such a big decision that will affect the whole country. We were not viewed as educated beings. The only people who were worthy of such an honor as voting were White men. Blacks and women were thought not to be educated enough to vote. Even to this day, we outnumber men seven to one, but they out number us in the military and at the voting booth.

Even though we've came a mighty long way, we still are living by those same standards. These are the standards that we need to free ourselves from. These are the kind of standards that Oprah didn't address enough. Oprah tends to put an emotional or spiritual spin on everything. She never talks about logic. She never tried to make women better thinkers. Women do not need to learn how to be emotional or spiritual. We are the most emotional, spiritual people on earth. We are the Mother Teresa's of the world.

We have never been held back from anything because we were emotional-we were held back because we weren't thought to be smart or educated. We weren't allowed to be in the military because of our "inability to learn", and couldn't vote because of our "inability to think".

Radio talk show host Neal Bortes made a comment about Democrats that also applied to women. He said Democrats are more likely to vote by what they feel, not by what they know. He also said that women are more likely to vote Democrat when they are single. Then when they are married, they vote Republican. This is because they now have the insight of a man, therefore proving this old age idea that we are not smart enough to make that decision on our own.

I think women are more likely to make decisions in life on feelings, instead of logic or reason. Some of us made some big mistakes in our life because we thought with our emotions and not with our brains. Now don't get me wrong, I believe in intuition. But Oprah has taught women to be more connected to their emotions and spirituality, and not to their brains!

In my article Beauty or Brains: Which takes a woman further? I talk about how it's so important for women to value education and independence. Dependence is based on a lack of education and a lack of confidence in one self. It's the idea that you don't know enough or have enough to make it on your own.

I see spiritual talk and crying on the Oprah show, more than any other show on television. I know you're thinking, "So, what's the problem?" The problem is... WE KNOW HOW TO CRY! WE KNOW HOW TO FOLLOW OUR HEART! WE KNOW HOW TO BE EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL! WE NEED TO PROVE TO THE WORLD THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY THINK!

Or is it just me who feels the need to prove that to the world? Maybe women don't care if we're viewed as the "less smart" sex. Maybe I'm the only one who cares, but I think that Oprah removing herself from daytime television may force women to watch modern day women like Tyra or Wendy Williams. And guess what? There is some buzz that Sarah Palin may be getting her own show. I talk about her in my article Femi-Nazi 2: A new feminist/conservative movement. So what is my mission? I want to end this old fashioned thinking in young women. Older women are probably set in their ways. But the youth still have hope. We listen to our heart, but we ignore our brains. And you know what? That is seldom a good thing. We need to learn how to value our knowledge as much as our emotions. It is not someone else's job (particularly a man) to think for you. That's not necessary when you have your own brain. Maybe the departure of the Oprah show will force us to use it.
