Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster Guitar Review

Mike Harris
Fender Stratocasters are known in the music world for being extremely versatile. There are so many options and customizations, it's hard to find two that are exactly alike. The Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster electric guitar is no exception, in that it has a ton of options and elective differences. But from finishes to necks, one thing that's certain is The Squier Standard Stratocaster is a solid entry to mid level guitar. Let's take a closer look to see what it has to offer.

Features: The Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster has a solid and contoured body made from agathis wood. This, however, is where the similarities between different model's bodies end. There are too many finishes to name, which include classic ones like Ebony and Sunburst, and more modern and hard edged looking ones like black satin. The neck of the Squier Standard Strat is bolted onto the body, and is made of maple. The fretboard of the guitar is either made of dark rosewood or light maple, and the inlays are either pearloid dots or black dots. The necks on every model have 22 frets total. All of the hardware, including the die cast tuners and tremolo bridge, are chrome. Additionally, the knobs and selector switch are matching plastic to the 3 ply pickguard protecting the body. This pickguard, surprisingly, is usually only found on the main line of authentic and expensive Fender models. The bridge of the Squier Standard Stratocaster is a two point fulcrum tremolo, which comes with a tone shifting (and cool to play with) whammy bar. Electronically, the Squier Standard Stratocaster has 3 single coil Alnico brand pickups, one tone and two volume control knobs, and a five way selector switch.

Playability: The Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster doesn't have locking tuners, which makes the tremolo bridge kind of a pain. If you use the whammy bar to excess, it is probably going to fall out of tune. Otherwise, the Standart Strat plays nicely. The rosewood and maple necks are thin and play nicely. Also, the action of the guitar, which is the height of the strings from the fretboard, is easily adjustable and can be set up to be nice and low. Basically, it's pretty darn easy to play.

Sound: This is where the Squier Standard Stratocaster separates itself from some of the other Squier models. The Alnico brand pickups are nice and versatile, and can deliver a wide range of tones. If you are a fan of classic blues musicians and modern or classic rock artists, you can count on being able to decently achieve their sounds.

Overall: For a beginning to mid range instrument the Fender Squier Standard Stratocaster delivers all of the essential qualities. It has the needed features, good playability, and a nice range of sounds and tones. You can find the Squier Standard Stratocaster in music stores for about $200.
