The living room should be regular in shape and must have plenty of sunlight and fresh air. It should be devoid of clutter. It should be built on a raised level if possible. Stagnant energy tends to accumulate in sunken rooms. Of course, the shape and structure are difficult to alter in most homes. Still with Feng Shui's guidance on using appropriate colors and charms, you can still keep up the energy levels.
The 'bagua', a map in the Feng Shui system, indicates nine areas (based on geographical directions) in the home that influence nine aspects (health, fame, relationship, creativity, opportunities and spiritual guidance, career, knowledge, family honor and prosperity) that completely define our lives. The rooms in your home would fall into one of the defined sections when you refer to the directions on the map. The bagua recommends brown and shades of yellow for the room if the living room is at the center of your home as it influences the vital forces of health. If the room occurs in the southern corner, use red color as it signifies fame and power. In the southwestern corner, use pink and rose colors as it signifies gentleness and freshness in relationships. White is recommended for the west that symbolizes creativity. Feng Shui advises grey and silver colors for a living room in the north-west for Chi that gives opportunities. A living room in the north should have dark colors signifying strength and success in career. If the room is in the north eastern corner, shades of blue are advised as they signify the boundless vastness of knowledge like the sky. In the eastern side black and green colors are believed to enhance family honor. In the south east, prosperity is supported by gold, red and purple.
A living room being reflective of family unions and general well-being influences the aspects of health, family honor, prosperity and fame.
Use appropriate paint colors and enhance the living room with similarly shaded upholstery, rugs and curtains.
Place mirrors in the room such that it reflects natural light. This will increase the vital life force in the room. According to Feng Shui, you may place a chime to ward off ill luck that someone entering your living room may bring. Well rounded furniture without sharp edges is also recommended to keep the energy flow continuous without abruptions. Feng Shui suggests that you must place your furniture in a manner that allows windows and doors to the living room to be visible from your sofas and chairs.
