Ferndale City Council Unanimously Agrees to Name Soccer Field After Nelson House

Nelson House died at the age of 69 this past summer, just before the Woodward Dream Cruise, an event that House began in 1995 to raise money for a soccer field. The cruise was originally expected to draw around 250 cruisers. Today it draws over 1 million spectators and participants.

House's plan worked and $83,000 was raised and put towards Dream Field, a children's soccer field at Martin Road Park. The Dream Cruise is actually named after the field, not the other way around. The Ferndale City Council unanimously agreed to modify the name in honor of House. Now, Dream Field will be known as Nelson House Kids Dream Field as a tribute to House's integral involvement in the creation of the field.

The Ferndale City Council has broad authority to name city-owned facilities and lands. However, names may not be related to commercial products or profit corporations. Any individual or organization may put forth a naming proposal.
